The overall purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of financing renewable energy sources on the assessment of sustainable development in Poland’s provinces. There are also two detailed objectives: (1) define how Polish policies are being passed on to local authorities; (2) realize a Poland’s provinces ranking, taking into account the indicators of sustainable development, thanks to the taxonomic measure of development in the area of environmental order. This study deals with the taxonomic assessment of local sustainable development in the local administration units of Poland. To this end, the methods of linear ordering were applied for the assessment of the level of objects differentiation with the use of a closed set of statistical features. The presented analysis proved that the taxonomic distances between synthetic measures for particular provinces are considerable. The highest values of the integrated measure in 2018 were obtained by the following provinces: Podlaskie, Subcarpathian and Lubusz. It is noteworthy to point to the big changes in the ranking between 2018 and 2016. The cluster analysis showed some progress in achieving the goals of sustainable development. The group of provinces with an average level of sustainable development in 2018 included six provinces compared to two provinces in 2016. Removing one indicator from the integrated measure (the financing of renewable energy sources (RES)) led to a moderate increase in the integrated measure across all the provinces. This implies that, on average, the financing of renewable energy sources exerts increasingly smaller impacts on the level of sustainable development in Poland.
The paper presents findings of the comparative study on relationships between remembrance story-telling and the transitional reconstruction of political identities. It identifies in which areas and fields of impact governments tend to use interpretations of the past to promote new leadership visions of society. Moreover, it verifies theoretical hypotheses related to the politicised remembrance and its role as a political asset during transformations, as well as it considers the theoretical framework of democracy-building (and a common prediction of its universal character). As a result, the study offers a detailed picture of the way remembrance narratives are transformed into explanations, justifications or legitimisation of new, post-authoritarian identities based on qualitative-to-quantitative analysis of the intensity of story-telling and its links with transitional identity politics. In the conclusion, the Authors present their consideration of research findings, and they discuss it with reference to the nature of transitional government’s remembrance policy as a sphere of social influence.
The aim of the paper is to provide the objective assessment of progress in the implementation of the goals of the local sustainable development strategy by the districts of Kuyavian-Pomeranian Province. In order to achieve our aim, we have devised, using methods of taxonomic analysis, the synthetic indicator (taking a lot of different measures of sustainable development into account), which shows the degree of the accomplishment of goals adopted in the sustainable development goals. In the collective of units under study, there is a significant differentiation of the level of indicators analyzed within the framework of the sustainable development strategy. It must be emphasized that there are as many as 12 districts in the lower quartile of the distribution of the synthetic measure, i.e., its level was below 0.25. 11 self-government units were in the second quartile of the distribution, i.e., in range between 0.25 and 0.5 of the synthetic indicator. Relatively big taxonomic distances between synthetic measures for individual districts, with quite a large set of features, show significant differentiation among these parts of Kuyavian-Pomeranian Province in terms of local sustainable development. Despite the fact that the examined objects belong to the same administrative unit, which would appear to be relatively coherent, they do not develop at the same pace. Moreover, given a broad set of indicators, they differ significantly when it comes to the rate of their sustainable development. The findings of this paper highlight the use of multidimensional taxonomic analysis for measuring the progress of local units in the degree of the accomplishment of the sustainable development goals. First of all, it helps to show differences in the implementation of the development strategies across districts. What is more, it shows these differences on the basis of the complete set of diverse features rather than single parameters (e.g., pace of growth). Thus, the multidimensional approach is a lot more precise when it comes to showing differences among the examined objects.
Th e paper considers the relationship between remembrance narratives on national heroes and proliferation of political attitudes, values and behaviours during democratisation. It discusses the impact of interpretations of the past on the development of civil society in the context of public education as an instrument of identity politics. Comparing the experiences of Chile, Estonia, Georgia, Poland, South Africa and Spain, the authors present the role of national heroes in the legitimisation of behaviours and attitudes, new elites and national unity. Th e discussed results prove that the establishment of a pro-democratic system of civic education increases chances for successful consolidation of democracy in post-authoritarian countries.
It is obvious that the educational system shapes the skill of critical thinking, also in the sphere of the assessment of political phenomena. Th e educational background of a person determines the kind of decisions he or she makes. Th ese decisions refer to political activity both defi ned as interest in political issues and manifested in the form of active political participation. Th e aim of this paper is to identify relations between holding a university degree and political subjectivity. Th e study, conducted with the use of a survey questionnaire, involved students from the University of Zielona Góra and from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.
