Objective: This study presents a preliminary report on the chest radiographic and computed tomography (CT) findings of the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pneumonia in Korea. Materials and Methods: As part of a multi-institutional collaboration coordinated by the Korean Society of Thoracic Radiology, we collected nine patients with COVID-19 infections who had undergone chest radiography and CT scans. We analyzed the radiographic and CT findings of COVID-19 pneumonia at baseline. Fisher's exact test was used to compare CT findings depending on the shape of pulmonary lesions. Results: Three of the nine patients (33.3%) had parenchymal abnormalities detected by chest radiography, and most of the abnormalities were peripheral consolidations. Chest CT images showed bilateral involvement in eight of the nine patients, and a unilobar reversed halo sign in the other patient. In total, 77 pulmonary lesions were found, including patchy lesions (39%), large confluent lesions (13%), and small nodular lesions (48%). The peripheral and posterior lung fields were involved in 78% and 67% of the lesions, respectively. The lesions were typically ill-defined and were composed of mixed ground-glass opacities and consolidation or pure ground-glass opacities. Patchy to confluent lesions were primarily distributed in the lower lobes (p = 0.040) and along the pleura (p < 0.001), whereas nodular lesions were primarily distributed along the bronchovascular bundles (p = 0.006). Conclusion: COVID-19 pneumonia in Korea primarily manifested as pure to mixed ground-glass opacities with a patchy to confluent or nodular shape in the bilateral peripheral posterior lungs. A considerable proportion of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia had normal chest radiographs.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-infected pneumonia emerged in Wuhan, China in December 2019. In this retrospective multicenter study, we investigated the clinical course and outcomes of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) from early cases in Republic of Korea. Methods: All of the cases confirmed by real time polymerase chain reaction were enrolled from the 1st to the 28th patient nationwide. Clinical data were collected and analyzed for changes in clinical severity including laboratory, radiological, and virologic dynamics during the progression of illness. Results: The median age was 40 years (range, 20-73 years) and 15 (53.6%) patients were male. The most common symptoms were cough (28.6%) and sore throat (28.6%), followed by fever (25.0%). Diarrhea was not common (10.7%). Two patients had no symptoms. Initial chest X-ray (CXR) showed infiltration in 46.4% of the patients, but computed tomography scan confirmed pneumonia in 88.9% (16/18) of the patients. In December 2019, a viral pneumonia outbreak caused by a novel betacoronavirus, the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), began in Wuhan, China. We report the epidemiological and clinical features of the first patient with 2019-nCoV pneumonia imported into Korea from Wuhan. This report suggests that in the early phase of 2019-nCoV pneumonia, chest radiography would miss patients with pneumonia and highlights taking travel history is of paramount importance for early detection and isolation of 2019-nCoV cases.

As of February 2020, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak started in China in December 2019 has been spreading in many countries in the world. With the numbers of confirmed cases are increasing, information on the epidemiologic investigation and clinical manifestation have been accumulated. However, data on viral load kinetics in confirmed cases are lacking. Here, we present the viral load kinetics of the first two confirmed patients with mild to moderate illnesses in Korea in whom distinct viral load kinetics are shown. This report suggests that viral load kinetics of SARS-CoV-2 may be different from that of previously reported other coronavirus infections such as SARS-CoV.

As the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak is ongoing, the number of individuals to be tested for COVID-19 is rapidly increasing. For safe and efficient screening for COVID-19, drive-through (DT) screening centers have been designed and implemented in Korea. Herein, we present the overall concept, advantages, and limitations of the COVID-19 DT screening centers. The steps of the DT centers include registration, examination, specimen collection, and instructions. The entire service takes about 10 minutes for one testee without leaving his or her cars. Increased testing capacity over 100 tests per day and prevention of cross-infection between testees in the waiting space are the major advantages, while protection of staff from the outdoor atmosphere is challenging. It could be implemented in other countries to cope with the global COVID-19 outbreak and transformed according to their own situations.A pandemic of an emerging infectious disease has similarity with bioterrorism in that both are disasters caused by infectious diseases and require safe and efficient use of resources. As of March 2020, the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is progressing to pandemic level despite global effort for containment, involving 101 countries with more than 100,000 confirmed cases. 1 With an increasing number of suspected and/or symptomatic individuals to be tested for COVID-19, 2 there has been a need for a safe and efficient screening system. For this purpose, drive-through (DT) screening centers have been designed and implemented in Korea, based on the previous concepts of point of dispensing for bioterrorism and DT clinic for pandemic influenza. 3,4 Herein, we introduce DT screening centers for COVID-19 and share our experience with healthcare authorities and providers all over the world.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the cause of one of the most deadly diseases of mankind, and despite the availability of effective treatments, tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health threat. The difficult challenges in treating multiple-drugresistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) TB and the importance of shortening the duration of treatment to improve patients' compliance make the discovery of new anti-TB drugs imperative (1-5). Attempts to discover new TB drugs and targets via large-scale screening against intact mycobacteria have largely been confined to synthetic compound libraries and to date have yielded only one new clinical TB drug, the diarylquinoline bedaquiline (6, 7). Although very potent, to be of maximum benefit, bedaquiline, a diarylquinoline, and nitroimidazoles (8) require new companion drugs to be used in a multidrug regimen.While the intensive search for antibiotics from soil microorganisms in the mid-20th century yielded several clinically useful TB drugs, the pathogenic nature of M. tuberculosis and its extremely slow growth rate did not allow classical agar diffusion tests and excluded M. tuberculosis from the initial target panel. The discovery of TB drugs of natural origin at that time therefore relied upon the detection of activity against nonmycobacteria in agar diffusion assays followed by bioassay-guided isolation of the active principle, again using nonmycobacteria. Activity against M. tuberculosis was only assessed once the active principle was purified.Because M. tuberculosis is uniquely susceptible to a number of antimicrobial agents, a high-throughput screening (HTS) of actinomycete extracts directly against the virulent H37Rv strain was conducted, and this campaign revealed selective anti-TB peptides produced by a genetically distinct Nonomuraea species, strain MJM5123. Here, we describe the activity profile of ecumicin, its efficacy in infected mice, the identification of its molecular target, and the elucidation of its unusual mechanism of action. MATERIALS AND METHODSHigh-throughput screening. Approximately 7,000 actinomycete cultures isolated from Korea, China, Nepal, the Philippines, Vietnam, Antarctica, and the Arctic Circle and maintained at Myongji University, South Korea, were fermented in 20-ml cultures in glucose-soybean starch (GSS) medium (rich medium), Bennett's medium (normal medium), and dextrinyeast-corn steep liquor (DYC) medium (minimal medium) (see Table S1 in the supplemental material). The mycelia and culture medium supernatants were separated and extracted with methanol and ethyl acetate, respectively. Nine extracts were thus generated from each microbial isolate.

Novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is found to cause a large outbreak started from Wuhan since December 2019 in China and SARS-CoV-2 infections have been reported with epidemiological linkage to China in 25 countries until now. We isolated SARS-CoV-2 from the oropharyngeal sample obtained from the patient with the first laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in Korea. Cytopathic effects of SARS-CoV-2 in the Vero cell cultures were confluent 3 days after the first blind passage of the sample. Coronavirus was confirmed with spherical particle having a fringe reminiscent of crown on transmission electron microscopy. Phylogenetic analyses of whole genome sequences showed that it clustered with other SARS-CoV-2 reported from Wuhan.Coronaviruses (CoVs), within the order Nidovirales, are enveloped, single-strand, positivesense RNA viruses with a large genome of approximately 30 kbp in length. CoV was cultured for the first time in human embryonic tracheal organ cultures by Tyrrell and Bynoe in 1965, 1 and it was named as 'corona' due to crown-like appearance of the surface projections on electron microscopy. All CoVs develop only in the cytoplasm of infected cells, bud into cytoplasmic vesicles, and then extrude in virus particles of 70-80 nm in diameter by exocytic secretory pathway.Among four genera of CoVs, beta-CoV includes five subgenus-embevovirus, sarbecovirus including severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-CoV, merbecovirus including Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-CoV, nobecovirus, and hibecovirus. In this study, we reported an intermediate-temperature ($150 C) sodium-sulfur (Na-S) battery. With a relatively low operating temperature, this novel battery could reduce the cost and safety issues associated with the conventional high-temperature (300-350 C) Na-S battery. A dense b 00 -Al 2 O 3 solid membrane and tetraglyme were utilized as the electrolyte separator and catholyte solvent in this battery. Solubility tests indicated that a cathode mixture of Na 2 S 4 and S exhibited extremely high solubility in tetraglyme (e.g., >4.1 M for Na 2 S 4 + 4 S). CV scans of Na 2 S 4 in tetraglyme revealed two pairs of redox couples with peaks at around 2.22 and 1.75 V, corresponding to the redox reactions of polysulfide species. The discharge/charge profiles of the Na-S battery showed a slope region and a plateau, indicating multiple steps and cell reactions.
