This paper provides a review of the family Lucanidae in Korea, which consists of 17 species belonging to 9 genera. One new species, Dorcus tenuihirsutus sp. nov., is described and the following taxonomical changes are proposed: Aegus laevicollis Saunders, 1854 is newly identified as Aegus laevicollis subnitidus Waterhouse, 1873; Macrodorcas striatipennis Motschulsky, 1861 is removed from the Korean fauna because this record is thought to have been based on the misinterpretation of locality and misidentification; Neolucanus saundersii Parry, 1864 is removed from the Korean fauna because this record is thought to have been based on misidentification.
This work was undertaken as an initial part of the collaborative effort between Korean and Mongolian researchers to study the terrestrial and aquatic insects in these countries. An analysis of data on faunal composition, taxonomic diversity and biogeographical structure of lamellicorn beetles in Korea and Mongolia was conducted in order to characterize the faunal relations between two countries. The Korean fauna of lamellicorn beetles is almost two fold greater in both generic diversity and species richness than that of Mongolia. The species compositions of lamellicorn beetles in two countries are substantially different from each other and the relative levels of faunal overlap are insignificant. Not only the faunal diversity and composition, but also the biogeographical structure of lamellicorn beetles in Korea and Mongolia display dissimilar patterns, except for their similar degree of endemism. Additional data on communities of dung beetles in the grasslands of central Mongolia, as well as a brief discussion on conservation issues of the endangered species in Korea, especially Gymnopleurus mopsus, are given.
The authors report a case of renal cell carcinoma in a right malrotated (horizontal axis) kidney. The patient was treated by hand-assisted laparoscopic radical nephrectomy. This is the first report of a horizontal axis malrotated kidney with renal cell carcinoma.
A taxonomic review of the tenebrionid tribe Bolitophagini in Korea is presented. Five species in four genera are recognized: Byrsax spiniceps Lewis, Byrsax kimurai Miyatake, Bolitophagus reticulates (Linnaeus, 1767), Boletoxenus bellicosus (Lewis) and Parabolitophagus felix (Lewis). A key, descriptions, host fungi, habitus photographs of adults, and illustrations of diagnostic characters are provided.
Eight species of the Stenopelmatoidea (Orthoptera: Ensifera) including two newly recorded Nippancistroger testaceus (Matsumura et Shiraki) and Anoplophilus acuticercus Karny are recognized in Korean fauna. Paratachycines (Hemitachycines) uenoi (Yamasaki) is proposed for junior synonym of Paratachycines (Hemitachycines) baldyrevi (Uvarov). The keys to species, characteristic figures and diagnoses for the newly recorded species are presented.
Here, we present a taxonomic review of the oedemerid subfamily Nacerdinae in Korea. Eleven species in five genera under two tribes are recognized. The subgenus Nacerdes (Patiala), represented by Nacerdes (Patiala) ocularis (Lewis), is identified for the first time in Korea. Keys, diagnoses, habitus photos of adults, and drawings of male genitalia are provided.
Melorheostosis often is disabling because of progressive contracture of the joint and soft tissue involved. Operative intervention often is hazardous and patients also have recurrences. A 14-year, 2-month-old boy, who presented with a recurrent equinoplanovalgus deformity of the right foot caused by melorheostosis, was treated successfully using the Ilizarov technique, including distraction osteotomy in the calcaneus. The patient had a painless, plantigrade, and functional foot at age 18 years.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
