The aim of this study was to evaluate procalcitonin (PCT) levels in the predicting of bloodstream infections in a large population of patients with positive blood cultures (BC) in the unit care of Avicenna military hospital of Marrakech. Material and Methods: This prospective study was carried out using clinical and routine laboratory data collected at the Clinical Microbiology and biochemistry from laboratory of Avicenna military hospital – Marrakech, Morocco, between January 2019 and December 2021. Results: 109 cases were collected from laboratory data of Avicenna military hospital in Marrakech. Most of patient were male with 79 cases (72.5%), blood cultures were positive in all cases. Procalcitonin were positive in the majority of patients with a 105 cases (96%). Klebsiella sp. was the most frequent germ in gram negative bacilli with a rate of 25 cases (23%) Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus was the most frequent germ in gram-positive cocci with a rate of 23 cases (21%).
Introduction: Hydatid disease is also known as cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic disease caused by a parasitic infection. CE is caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. Humans are accidental intermediate hosts and they get infected following the accidental ingestion of Echinococcus granulosus eggs. Usually, the disease is diagnosed regarding clinical history, serologyand imaging. Aims: To evaluate the contribution of Hydatid serology in the diagnosis and monitoring of Hydatid cysts in the parasitology and mycology department at the AMH of Marrakesh, Morocco. Material and Methods: This study was conducted to evaluate the contribution of Hydatid serology in the diagnosis and monitoring of Hydatid cysts in the parasitology and mycology department at the Avicenna Military Hospital (AMH) of Marrakesh, Morocco. A retrospective study among 62 suspected cases from January 2018-December 2020 was conducted. Results: The ELISA test was used for serology. Out of the 62 cases, 23 (37%) were seropositive. Most of the seropositive cases had an average age of 38 years and were from rural areas, 86.5%. The liver was the most affected organ, 56.5%, and hypochondriac pain was the most prevalent symptom, 62.7%. Otherwise, the false-negative cases for the ELISA test were high implying the test had low sensitivity and specificity. Otherwise, the ELISA test can be used for the diagnosis and monitoring of Hydatid disease. Conclusion: Hydatid cyst is relatively common in Morocco with significant morbidity and mortality and timely detection is imperative towards management and preventive efforts.
Covid-19 is a serious pathology it is associated with a deep immunodepression which favors invasive fungal infections especially in patients in intensive care unit. We report in our work a series of five covid-19 patients with fungal co-infection. We conducted a retrospective study including all COVID-19 patients hospitalized in intensive care unit for acute respiratory distress syndrome. Patients who presented a clinical worsening during their hospitalization were sampled with mycological study (bronchoalveolar lavage, serum and fungal blood culture). The diagnosis of fungal superinfection was retained in five patients, two of whom had probable invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. Two other patients had a Cryptoccocusneoformans infection, one of which was disseminated. Candida albicans sepsis was found in only one patient. In the literature, invasive candidiasis and invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. in covid-19 patients are associated with a high morbidity and mortality rate, hence the importance of early diagnosis and management. It should be noted that the clinical presentation of invasive fungal infections is not very specific, especially at the beginning of the infection when antifungal treatment is more effective.
