Childhood and adolescent overweight and obesity are increasing in China, but limited information is available on its secular trends in Guangzhou. In this cross-sectional study, ten-wave successive data were obtained from the physical fitness surveillance for students in Guangzhou from 2003 to 2012. A total of 2,619,154 urban students aged 7–18 years were included. The age-standardized prevalence of overweight and obesity increased significantly over the period: overweight rose from 10.15% to 14.07% in boys and 6.39% to 8.11% in girls, while obesity increased from 5.65% to 8.31% for boys and 3.43% to 4.12% for girls, respectively (P < 0.05). The increasing trend was significant across almost all age-sex-specific groups (P < 0.05), especially in the last five years. The prevalence of overweight and obesity grew continuously in both sexes, but the pace of change for boys were faster than that for girls. The highest prevalence of overweight was found among 10- to 12-year-old boys, that of obesity among 7- to 9-year-old boys and girls. In conclusion, overweight and obesity have increased significantly among urban children and adolescents in Guangzhou during 2003–2012. Further analysis of influencing factors and comprehensive interventions are urgently needed to combat the obesity epidemic among urban children and adolescents in Guangzhou.
In Guangzhou, China, whether the trend of a decreasing pubertal age has continued in recent years remained unknown, and the association between obesity and early puberty was still controversial. Herein, we conducted a serial cross-sectional study using data from physical fitness surveillance (2005–2012), to determine the recent trends in age at spermarche and menarche among students in Guangzhou, and to investigate whether elevated BMI modified timing of spermarche and menarche. This study included 1,278,258 urban students. In boys, no significant differences were observed in median ages of spermarche (MAS) from 2005 to 2012, with overlapping 95% CIs. Similar results were observed for median ages of menarche (MAM) in girls. The Cox-Stuart trend test showed neither upward nor downward shift in MAS and MAM over time (P = 0.625; 1.000). Each year, both MAS and MAM decreased with increasing BMI. Furthermore, a higher BMI was associated with early age at spermarche and menarche, with ORs of 1.052 (95% CI = 1.045–1.059) and 1.233 (95% CI = 1.220–1.247) in 2012 for boys and girls, respectively. In conclusion, the pubertal timing has been stable in urban students from 2005 to 2012. Furthermore, obesity was associated with early timing of spermarche and menarche.
Use of the Internet has become an integral part of daily life. Adolescents are especially at a higher risk of developing problematic Internet use (PIU). Although one of the most well-known comorbid conditions of PIU is sleep disturbance, little is known about the sex disparity in this association. This school-based survey in students of grades 7–9 was conducted to estimate the prevalence of PIU and sleep disturbance among Chinese adolescents, to test the association between PIU and sleep disturbance, and to investigate the role of the child’s sex in this association. A two-stage stratified cluster sampling method was used to recruit participants, and two-level logistic regression models were fitted. The mean Internet addiction test score was 37.2 (SD: 13.2), and 15.5% (736) met the criteria for PIU. After adjusting for control variables, problematic Internet users were at a higher risk of sleep disturbance (adjusted odds ratio = 2.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.07–3.19). Sex-stratified analyses also demonstrated that association was greater in girls than boys. In this respect, paying more attention to the sleep patterns of adolescents who report excessive Internet use is recommended, and this early identification may be of practical importance for schools, parents, and adolescents themselves.
BackgroundPrevious studies indicated that excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) was positively associated with offspring obesity. Nevertheless, little is known about the effect of GWG on offspring thinness. This study aimed to assess the association of GWG with childhood weight status across the full range of weight status by prepregnancy body mass index (BMI).MethodsWe used data from a retrospective study of 33,828 Chinese children aged 6–18 years and their mothers. Children’s weight and height were objectively measured. Maternal GWG and other information were collected by using self-reported questionnaires. Multivariate linear regressions and logistic regressions were applied.ResultsOverall, the prevalence of thinness and overweight/obesity in children were 12.9 and 17.3% respectively (p < 0.05). Children’s BMI z-score was on average 0.021 higher for every 1-kg greater GWG. For mothers who were underweight or normal weight before pregnancy, excessive GWG was positively associated with offspring overweight/obesity [OR (95% CI): 1.51 (1.21, 1.90) and 1.30 (1.17, 1.45)], whereas inadequate GWG was associated with increased risk of offspring thinness [OR (95% CI): 1.24 (1.05, 1.46) and 1.17 (1.04, 1.32)]. Similar but non-significant associations were found in prepregnancy overweight mothers. Notably, there was a very high prevalence of child overweight/obesity (30.2%) in prepregnancy overweight subgroup regardless of GWG status.ConclusionsInadequate GWG was associated with an increased risk of offspring thinness, whereas excessive GWG was associated with an increased risk of offspring overweight and obesity among prepregnancy underweight and normal weight mothers only.
Whether irisin concentrations are associated with physical activity (PA) and sedentary time (ST) remains unknown. The role of irisin on cardiometabolic health among children has been contradictory and scarce. This study aimed to examine associations of PA and ST with irisin concentrations and relationships between irisin concentrations and cardiometabolic parameters among children. Additionally, we assessed the interaction between PA or ST and irisin concentrations on cardiometabolic parameters. Basing on a cross-sectional survey of 3,651 general children aged 7–12 years, 575 with different self-reported PA (moderate-vigorous intensity PA ≥ 60 min/day or <150 min/week) and ST (gender-, age-specific ST ≥ 75% or <25% percentile) levels were selected. PA and ST were assessed by the validated international physical activity questionnaires. Fasting blood glucose and lipid profile levels were measured with standard methods by biochemistry analyzer. Plasma irisin concentrations were measured by ELISA. The associations of PA and ST with circulating irisin concentrations were examined by linear regression. Linear regression analysis was also used to estimate associations of circulating irisin concentrations with cardiometabolic variables. Interactions between PA or ST and irisin concentrations on cardiometabolic parameters were calculated using multiple linear regression models with dichotomized factors (low PA and high PA; low ST and high ST). No significant association was observed between circulating irisin concentrations and habitual PA or ST. Irisin concentrations were negatively associated with body mass index (BMI) (β = −0.220), BMI z-score (β = −0.098), waist circumference (β = −0.621), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (β = −0.561), and triglyceride (β = −0.019) in low PA subgroup, and negatively related to fasting blood glucose (β = −0.040) among high PA subgroup. Moreover, irisin concentrations were negatively associated with BMI (β = −0.157) and fasting blood glucose (β = −0.026) only in high ST subgroup (all P < 0.05). We also observed a significant interaction between PA and irisin concentrations on BMI ( P interaction = 0.0350), BMI z-score ( P interaction = 0.0173), and DBP ( P interaction = 0.0068). In summary, irisin concentrations were not associated with habitual PA or ST in children. The negative associations of irisin concentrations with BMI, BMI z-score, and DBP were found only among children being inactive, implying that irisin may contribute to an improvement in health, especially among children with unhealthy lifestyles.

BackgroundStudies on the associations between maternal complications during pregnancy and childhood asthma are exclusively conducted in Western countries. The findings are mixed and may not be translated to other populations. We aimed to investigate the associations among the Chinese population and to determine whether the associations were mediated through preterm birth, cesarean delivery, low birth weight, and not breastfeeding in the first 6 months.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective cohort study of 166 772 children in Guangzhou, China. Information on maternal gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, and gestational anemia during pregnancy was extracted from medical records. Ever diagnosis of asthma in children aged 6–12 years was obtained by questionnaire. Logistic regression models and mediation analyses were used to estimate the adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidential intervals (CIs) for childhood asthma.ResultsGestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, and gestational anemia during pregnancy were associated with an increased risk of ever diagnosed childhood asthma; the aOR was 1.48 (95%CI 1.37–1.60), 1.71 (95%CI 1.65–1.78) and 1.34 (95%CI 1.26–1.45), respectively. A stronger association was observed for 2 or 3 gestational complications (aOR=2.02, 95%CI 1.93–2.16) than 1 gestational complication (aOR=1.64, 95%CI 1.52–1.77). The aOR for three gestational complications was 1.35 (95%CI 1.26–1.45), 1.63 (95%CI 1.58–1.70), and 1.32 (95%CI 1.24–1.43), respectively, after controlling for the mediators, including preterm birth, cesarean delivery, low birth weight, and not breastfeeding in the first 6 months.ConclusionsGestational hypertension, diabetes, and anemia during pregnancy were associated with childhood asthma, and the associations were partially explained by the mediation effects.
The purpose of the paper is to review the studies on family and identify the major factor contribute to these psychiatric problems. The basic psychiatric problem was range from bipolar disorder to antisocial personality disorder with the addition of reading disability. In the study of using the principle of animal behavior to research three different types of the psychiatric problem were being used to find out the influence of genetic and environment on both the history and current condition of the family and the impact on people’s future behavior with the experiment of how family study and twin study. This is a common psychiatric disease among current society due to the heavy pressure around people after reviewing different types of articles related to this psychiatric problem. The study was based on several datasets from the previous study, including 3 family studies and 6 twin studies with several different types of DSM questionnaires and interview information from thousands of twins with various in the category. With an analysis of all the statistical information, we conclude that the psychiatric problem is closely related. Both genetic and environmental are differentiated in the percentage of effect to the cause of the related problem.
