In the paper the effect of negative pre-swirl on the performance and the flow in a centrifugal compressor stage are investigated by both the experimental and numerical methods. The results show that, at a negative pre-swirl, whether the pressure ratio of compressor is increased or not is determined by the contest between the increased energy transfer and flow losses. At a large negative pre-swirl, the flow losses in the IGV and the impeller are increased obviously, which makes the pressure ratio and efficiency reduced dramatically. The further flow analysis show that, the enhanced separation area in the IGV and the depravation of the inlet flow condition of the impeller are the main sources of the losses, while there is almost no influence of the pre-swirl on the diffuser losses. Additionally, at a large negative pre-swirl there exist vortexes shedding from the separation region at impeller leading edge, which causes severe excited force on the impeller leading edge.
The operating range of a centrifugal compressor is often limited by the occurrence of the flow instability, such as diffuser rotating stall or system surge. In the paper, the unsteady numerical simulations are performed on a low-speed centrifugal compressor to investigate the characteristic of the rotating stall in the vaned diffuser. And also, the developed model of lumped parameter is used to predict the system instability.
The flow field in the diffuser is firstly investigated at near stall condition. It is found that the leading-edge vortex and the secondary flow induce the hub-corner separation at the suction side of the diffuser blade. When the mass flow rate is reduced gradually, the fore part of the volute turns to act as a diffuser from a nozzle. Under the influence of the asymmetry induced by the volute, the hub-corner separation firstly develops into rotating stall in the passage with the lowest mass flow rate when at critical stall point. And then the diffuser rotating stall propagates along the circumferential direction at about 7% of the impeller speed.
And also, the model of lumped parameter considering the effect of rotating stall is developed to analyze the system instability of mild surge. The predicted vibration frequency is within 5.8% of the measurement and the predicted transient process in mild surge matches well with the measurement. With different volume of the compressed air, the transient compressor characteristic tends to be stabilized or oscillates in a cycle along the counter-clockwise with different magnitude.
The diffuser rotating stall in a centrifugal compressor with vaned diffuser is one of important unsteady flow phenomena, which limits the operating range of the compressor. In this paper, the unsteady CFD analysis on a low-speed centrifugal compressor has been performed to investigate the flow characteristic in the diffuser and the propagation of the diffuser rotating stall.
The flow behaviors at the outlet of the impeller at design and off-design conditions are firstly investigated. It is found that a reversal flow, induced by the tip leakage flow, exists near the shroud at the impeller outlet and becomes serious with the mass flow rate reduced. Due to the span-wise variation of the flow angle at the diffuser inlet and the inversed pressure gradient in the passage, the leading-edge vortex (LEV) generates on the diffuser leading edge. The LEV then induces the secondary flow in the diffuser passage and then causes the hub-corner separation. Furthermore, the propagation of the diffuser rotating stall is presented in details.
The suction-side separation near the hub induces the blockage in the passage. And the shedding vortex from the suction side moves toward the leading edge of the adjacent blade. When the vortex reaches to the leading edge of the adjacent blade, the incidence increase and a new separation occurs on the suction side. With the development of the new separation, the passage becomes blocked gradually and the upstream stalled passage recovers to a normal condition. The rotating stall propagates along the direction of the impeller rotation at about 4.5% of the impeller rotational speed.
