Rapid response to destructive tsunami and seismic events requires rapid determination of the earthquake magnitude. We propose a new method that employs peak ground velocities (PGVs) derived from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data to estimate earthquake magnitudes. With a total of 1434 records from 22 events as the constraints, we perform the regression and obtain a PGV scaling law for magnitude determination. The advantage of the new method is that the PGVs are extracted from the GNSS velocity waveforms, which can be easily computed using broadcast GNSS ephemeris. In contrast, the peak ground displacement (PGD) depends on a sophisticated high-precision GNSS-processing subject to external correction data, realization of which cannot be kept robust constantly, especially in real time. The results show that the PGV magnitudes agree with reported moment magnitudes with mean absolute deviation of 0.26 magnitude units for the 22 events and also agree well with the PGD magnitude. We further demonstrate that GNSS-derived PGV and the modified Mercalli intensity values can be consistent with their counterparts from the U.S. Geological Survey ShakeMap products and therefore the GNSS-derived PGVs have the potential to be included in the ShakeMap as a complementary constraint, especially in areas with sparse seismic station coverage for large earthquake.

Summary Precise point positioning (PPP) can measure ground motions with a centimeter-level accuracy using only one receiver. It has been widely used in earthquake monitoring and earthquake early warning (EEW) systems. However, traditional PPP highly depends on well-established and robust internet infrastructure for data communication. Along with the broadcast ephemeris, the orbit and clock corrections transmitted by the B2b signals of BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) can be used to recover the precise products of GPS and BDS. Since the B2b products, namely the satellite state parameter messages, are accessible even without internet infrastructure, PPP with B2b signals is more suitable for real-time applications. This study witnesses the application of PPP with B2b products in seismic monitoring for the first time. The shake table experiments demonstrate that PPP with B2b can reach a millimeter-level accuracy in horizontal in earthquake monitoring for GPS-only, BDS-only and GPS/BDS combination. The application to the 2021 Mw 7.4 Maduo earthquake shows that the accuracies of seismic displacements derived from GPS-only PPP with B2b products are 1.7 cm, 2.4 cm and 1.7 cm in east, north and vertical components, compared with those from GPS-only PPP with final precise products. We therefore conclude that PPP with B2b products has a promising prospect in seismogeodesy and related applications such as EEW and rapid hazard response.

Summary High-rate Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) has emerged as an effective method to recover seismic waveforms without saturation and drifts, but it has the limitation of relatively lower sampling rate and higher noise level compared to seismic instruments. In this study, we present a new seismogeodetic method by integrating GNSS and accelerometer data to obtain optimal real-time seismic waveforms. Unlike traditional integration methods based on GNSS techniques of relative positioning or precise point positioning, the new method uses a GNSS time difference technique and inherits its unique advantage in real-time and high-accuracy velocity solutions. Furthermore, by incorporating the tightly coupled structure, it can overcome the cascading problem and provide more accurate and robust waveforms compared to its loosely coupled counterpart. The performance of this method is first compared with the traditional loosely coupled approach in challenging environments through a set of shake table experiments. With three GNSS satellites, this approach method can improve the accuracy of velocities and displacements by 42 per cent and 87 per cent, respectively. With four or more GNSS satellites, the average improvements of the method reach 25 per cent and 41 per cent for the velocities and displacements, respectively. We then validate the full performances of the method through simulated shake table experiments and collocated GNSS and accelerometer data during the 2016 Mw6.6 central Italy earthquake. The simulated and real-event analyses demonstrate that the new integration method can take full advantage of the complementary characteristics of GNSS and accelerometer sensors. By providing more accurate and broadband velocity and displacement waveforms in a real-time or near-real-time manner, this method is quite promising in earthquake early warning and rapid source inversion.

The opening access of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) raw data in Android smart devices has led to numerous studies on precise point positioning on mobile phones, among which single-frequency precise point positioning (SF-PPP) has become popular because smartphone-based dual-frequency data still suffer from poor observational quality. As the ionospheric delay is a dominant factor in SF-PPP, we first evaluated two SF-PPP approaches with the MGEX (Multi-GNSS Experiment) stations, the Group and Phase Ionospheric Correction (GRAPHIC) approach and the uncombined approach, and then applied them to a Huawei P40 smartphone. For MGEX stations, both approaches achieved less than 0.1 m and 0.2 m accuracy in horizontal and vertical components, respectively. Uncombined SF-PPP manifested a significant decrease in the convergence time by 40.7%, 20.0%, and 13.8% in the east, north, and up components, respectively. For P40 data, the SF-PPP performance was analyzed using data collected with both a built-in antenna and an external geodetic antenna. The P40 data collected with the built-in antenna showed lower carrier-to-noise ratio (C/N0) values, and the pseudorange noise reached 0.67 m, which is about 67% larger than that with a geodetic antenna. Because the P40 pseudorange noise presented a strong correlation with C/N0, a C/N0-dependent weight model was constructed and used for the P40 data with the built-in antenna. The convergence of uncombined SF-PPP approach was faster than the GRAPHIC model for both the internal and external antenna datasets. The root mean square (RMS) errors for the uncombined SF-PPP solutions of P40 with an external antenna were 0.14 m, 0.15 m, and 0.33 m in the east, north, and up directions, respectively. In contrast, the P40 with an embedded antenna could only reach 0.72 m, 0.51 m, and 0.66 m, respectively, indicating severe positioning degradation due to antenna issues. The results indicate that the two SF-PPP models both can achieve sub-meter level positioning accuracy utilizing multi-GNSS single-frequency observations from mobile smartphones.
