Rechargeable aqueous Zn‐ion batteries promise high capacity, low cost, high safety, and sustainability for large‐scale energy storage. The Zn metal anode, however, suffers from the dendrite growth and side reactions that are mainly due to the absence of an appropriate solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. Herein, the in situ formation of a dense, stable, and highly Zn2+‐conductive SEI layer (hopeite) in aqueous Zn chemistry is demonstrated, by introducing Zn(H2PO4)2 salt into the electrolyte. The hopeite SEI (≈140 nm thickness) enables uniform and rapid Zn‐ion transport kinetics for dendrite‐free Zn deposition, and restrains the side reactions via isolating active Zn from the bulk electrolyte. Under practical testing conditions with an ultrathin Zn anode (10 µm), a low negative/positive capacity ratio (≈2.3), and a lean electrolyte (9 µL mAh−1), the Zn/V2O5 full cell retains 94.4% of its original capacity after 500 cycles. This work provides a simple yet practical solution to high‐performance aqueous battery technology via building in situ SEI layers.

Rechargeable aqueous Zn/MnO2 batteries are very attractive large‐scale energy storage technologies, but still suffer from limited cycle life and low capacity. Here the novel adoption of a near‐neutral acetate‐based electrolyte (pH ≈ 6) is presented to promote the two‐electron Mn4+/Mn2+ redox reaction and simultaneously enable a stable Zn anode. The acetate anion triggers a highly reversible MnO2/Mn2+ reaction, which ensures high capacity and avoids the issue of structural collapse of MnO2. Meanwhile, the anode‐friendly electrolyte enables a dendrite‐free Zn anode with outstanding stability and high plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency (99.8%). Hence, a high capacity of 556 mA h g−1, a lifetime of 4000 cycles without decay, and excellent rate capability up to 70 mA cm−2 are demonstated in this new near‐neutral aqueous Zn/MnO2 battery by simply manipulating the salt anion in the electrolyte. The acetate anion not only modifies the surface properties of MnO2 cathode but also creates a highly compatible environment for the Zn anode. This work provides a new opportunity for developing high‐performance Zn/MnO2 and other aqueous batteries based on the salt anion chemistry.

To meet the demanding requirements in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) or electric vehicles (EVs), higher energy density materials, such as the Li-rich, layered manganese-based oxides (LLOs) with the general formula xLi 2 MnO 3 ·(1-x)LiTMO 2 (TM = Mn, Ni, Co, etc.), are promising candidates as they possess higher reversible capacity (>250 mAh g −1 ), improved safety and much reduced cost. [4][5][6][7][8][9] Recent microscopic evidence reveals the intergrowth of rhombohedral LiTMO 2 (R-3m) and the monoclinic Li 2 MnO 3 -like layered structure (C/2m) at the atomic scale in the oxide grains. [10] The Li 2 MnO 3 component serves as an electrochemically active phase for Li storage when cycled above 4.5 V versus Li/Li + . [8,[11][12][13][14] Nevertheless, these LLO materials undergo steady voltage/capacity decay when cycled above 4.5 V, resulting in a substantial decrease of the cathode energy density. [15][16][17][18] The origin of voltage/capacity decay upon cycling stems from cation migration between TM layers and Li layers and subsequent phase transformation. [19,20] The cationic doping with other metallic cations (such as Mg, [21] Al, [22] Ti, [23] Sn, [24] Ru, [25] Y, [26] Zn, [27] etc.) and polyanion doping based on nonmetal elements, such as BO 4 5− , [28] SiO 4 4− , [29] PO 4 3-, [30] etc., have been employed to improve the cyclic durability by weakening the TM-O covalency in the oxygen closepacked structure. In addition, surface coatings using metal oxides, [31][32][33][34] fluorides and phosphates, [35][36][37] LiNiPO 4 and Li 3 VO 4 , [38][39][40] have been applied to protect the surface structure from side reactions with the electrolyte under high voltage and to restrain the layered-to-spinel transformation which occurs preferentially on the crystal surface and leads to capacity fading of LLO materials. However, the ionic dopants and coating materials are mostly electrochemically inactive, so the improved cycling stability is achieved at the expense of reduced specific capacity/energy density of the cathode. Moreover, a conformal and continuous coating on the surface of oxide particles is rather difficult to obtain practically. A Li-rich Layered@Spinel@Carbon heterostructured cathode material for LIBs, which comprises Li-rich layered core, a spinel interlayer and a carbon nano-coating.

Hierarchical nanocomposite of ultrathin WS2 nanosheets uniformly attached on the surface of hollow nitrogen-doped carbon spheres (WS2@HNCSs) were successfully fabricated via a facile synthesis strategy. When evaluated as an anode material for LIBs, the hierarchical WS2@HNCSs exhibit a high specific capacity of 801.4 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1), excellent rate capability (545.6 mA h g(-1) at a high current density of 2 A g(-1)), and great cycling stability with a capacity retention of 95.8% after 150 cycles at 0.5 A g(-1). The Li-ion storage properties of our WS2@HNCSs nanocomposite are much better than those of the previously most reported WS2-based anode materials. The impressive electrochemical performance is attributed to the robust nanostructure and the favorable synergistic effect between the ultrathin (3-5 layers) WS2 nanosheets and the highly conductive hollow N-doped carbon spheres. The hierarchical hybrid can simultaneously facilitate fast electron/ion transfer, effectively accommodate mechanical stress from cycling, restrain agglomeration, and enable full utilization of the active materials. These characteristics make WS2@HNCSs a promising anode material for high-performance LIBs.
