The weekly protocol of iv methylprednisolone therapy is more efficient and safer than the daily protocol for patients with active moderate-to-severe GO.

The Orchidaceae is a diverse and wide spread family of flowering plants that are of great value in ornamental, medical, conservation, and evolutionary research. The broad diversity in morphology, growth form, life history, and habitat mean that the members of Orchidaceae exhibit various physiological properties. Epiphytic orchids are often characterized by succulent leaves with thick cell walls, cuticles, and sunken stomata, whereas terrestrial orchids possess rhizomes, corms, or tubers. Most orchids have a long juvenile period, slow growth rate, and low photosynthetic capacity. This reduced photosynthetic potential can be largely explained by CO2 diffusional conductance and leaf internal structure. The amount of light required for plant survival depends upon nutritional mode, growth form, and habitat. Most orchids can adapt to their light environments through morphological and physiological adjustments but are sensitive to sudden changes in irradiance. Orchids that originate from warm regions are susceptible to chilling temperatures, whereas alpine members are vulnerable to high temperatures. For epiphytic orchids, rapid water uptake by the velamen radicum, water storage in their pseudobulbs and leaves, slow water loss, and Crassulacean Acid Metabolism contribute to plant-water balance and tolerance to drought stress. The presence of the velamen radicum and mycorrhizal fungi may compensate for the lack of root hairs, helping with quick absorbance of nutrients from the atmosphere. Under cultivation conditions, the form and concentration of nitrogen affect orchid growth and flowering. However, the limitations of nitrogen and phosphorous on epiphytic orchids in the wild, which require these plants to depend on mycorrhizal fungi for nutrients throughout the entire life cycle, are not clearly understood. Because they lack endosperm, seed germination depends upon obtaining nutrients via mycorrhizal fungi. Adult plants of some autotrophic orchids also gain carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and other elements from their mycorrhizal partners. Future studies should examine the mechanisms that determine slow growth and flower induction, the physiological causes of variations in flowering behavior and floral lifespan, the effects of nutrients and atmospheric-nitrogen deposition, and practical applications of mycorrhizal fungi in orchid cultivation.

Multifunctional hydrogel with outstanding conductivity and mechanical flexibility has received enormous attention as wearable electronic devices. However, fabricating transparent, ultrastretchable, and biocompatible hydrogel with lowtemperature stability still remains a tremendous challenge. In this study, an ultrastretchable, highly transparent, and antifreezing zwitterionic-based electronic sensor is developed by introducing zwitterionic proline (ZP) into gellan gum/polyacrylamide (GG/ PAAm) double network (DN) hydrogel. The existence of ZP endows the hydrogel with remarkable frost resistance. The toughness and transparency of zwitterionic Ca-GG/PAAm-ZP DN hydrogel can be maintained down to −40 °C. Also, the zwitterionic hydrogel shows good biocompatibility and protein adsorption resistance. The zwitterionic Ca-GG/PAAm-ZP DN hydrogel-based strain sensor can accurately monitor human motions (such as speaking and various joint bendings) under a broad temperature range from −40 to 25 °C. The zwitterionic Ca-GG/PAAm-ZP DN hydrogel-based strain sensor will be of immense value in the field of wearable electronic devices, especially for extreme environment applications.

Fertility control has been identified by studies in the laboratory and the field as a more appropriate and long-term control strategy for rodent pests than lethal control. In this study, we investigated the effects of quinestrol on mass of reproductive organs and on social behaviors in female and male Indochinese forest rat (Rattus andamanensis (Blyth, 1860)] using approach of morphometrics and genetics). [corrected]. A total of 16 adult females and 16 adult males were randomly assigned to 4 groups. One male and one female group were fed rice with 0.005% quinestrol by weight for 7 days, and another 2 groups were fed rice only. After 7 days, rats were assigned to 10 min dyadic encounters between groups, and investigation, aggression, defense and attack latency were quantified. All animals were killed on day 10, and reproductive organs were dissected and weighed. Dyadic encounter data showed that there were obvious changes in social behaviors of quinestrol-treated rats. Quinestrol significantly inhibited the investigative behavior of quinestrol-treated males toward control females in Rattus nitidus, but seldom affected investigation between control males and quinestrol-treated females. Aggression of control females toward quinestrol-treated males was higher than that of quinestrol-treated females, and defense of quinestrol-treated males toward control females was more remarkable than that of control males. Quinestrol remarkably decreased wet masses of epididymis and spermotophore in males and ovaries in females, but had no effect on wet masses of testes and uteri after quinestrol treatment. These results indicate that the anti-fertility effects of quinestrol on R. nitidus are attributed to not only suppressing reproductive organs but also impacting social behaviors associated with territory defense and mate choice.

Hydrogels as wound dressings have received great attention in recent years. It is highly important yet challenging to develop hydrogel dressings that are biocompatible and that can promote wound healing by lowering the risk of inflammatory responses. In this work, we designed and prepared zwitterionic dextran-based hydrogels using carboxybetaine dextran (CB-Dex) and sulfobetaine dextran (SB-Dex) as raw materials, respectively. The efficacy of CB-Dex and SB-Dex hydrogels in promoting wound recovery was evaluated using a mouse skin wound model. Results suggested that the zwitterionic dextran wound dressings showed a faster healing rate than natural dextran hydrogel and a commercial wound dressing (Duoderm film) due to their excellent protein resistance and capacity to scavenge free hydroxyl radicals. In addition, both CB-Dex and SB-Dex hydrogel wound dressings showed excellent cytocompatibility with NIH3T3 and L929 cells, as well as antibacterial adhesion against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Furthermore, both zwitterionic hydrogels demonstrated self-healing properties and can be stretched to adapt to irregular full-thickness wound beds. More importantly, they can be removed from the wound site painlessly by washing with normal saline. Overall, this work provided a new pathway to fabricate multifunctional polysaccharide hydrogels for wound treatment and pain relief when changing wound dressings.

Smoking, even past smoking, was an independent risk factor associated with impaired response to intravenous corticosteroids in patients with GO. Smokers with GO should be given optimised treatment strategy such as higher dose of GC or combined radiation therapy.
