Retaining a waterproof coal pillar is the most effective water conservation method for coal seam mining close to a reservoir, and determining a reasonable width for the waterproof coal pillar has been a common problem among mining scholars for a considerably long time. In case of mining a 4−2 coal seam close to the Changjiagou Reservoir in the Zhangjiamao mine, the research methods of theoretical analysis, physical simulation using similar materials, and numerical simulation have been adopted to analyze the overburden strata mining failure features and the surface subsidence law. Additionally, the influences of the width of the coal pillar on the reservoir bank slope stability have been investigated. The results denote that a coal pillar can be divided into a mine-pressure-influenced zone, an effective waterproof zone, and a water-level-influenced zone with respect to water resistance. Furthermore, the width of the waterproof coal pillar was determined to be 107.41 m by theoretical analysis. The simulation test indicated that when the working face advanced close to the reservoir, the reservoir bank exhibited vertical downward as well as transverse abscission layer fractures and the divided topsoil slipped toward the reservoir. Subsequently, the judgment conditions required for determining the critical width of the waterproof coal pillar were proposed based on the requirements to prevent the reservoir bank slope from instability failure and the water gushing accident in goaf. The maximum width of the waterproof coal pillar when the top point on the slope surface experienced reverse horizontal displacement and several key points produced sharp vertical displacements or when the pore pressure in the coal seam roof and floor suddenly became 0 was considered to be the critical width. Furthermore, the critical width was determined to be 96 m via simulation analysis, verifying the rationality of the theoretical method. These results could provide a theoretical basis for determining the width of the waterproof coal pillar of the coal seam located close to a reservoir.

This study investigated the temperature field distribution of a freezing inclined shaft. Thus, a three-dimensional physical simulation test system was developed, and the system consists of six parts, which are simulation box and shaft model, loading system, freezing system, external environment simulation system, and data acquisition system. From the results of physical and mechanical property test of artificially frozen sand, in the range of 25°C to -20°C, the heat capacity of sand decreases first, then increases, decreases, and finally tends to be stable; the thermal conductivity of sand gradually increases and finally becomes stable; and the cohesion, internal friction angle, uniaxial compressive strength, and elastic modulus of artificially frozen sand all increase as the freezing temperature decreases. The three-dimensional physical simulation test and field measurement showed that the distance from the freezing pipe is the main factor affecting freezing wall temperature, and the closer to the freezing pipe, the faster the cooling rates. Comparison of theoretical calculation results and field measurement results shows that the calculation formula of freezing wall temperature with time of the inclined shaft can reflect the general law of freezing wall temperature cooling. Therefore, the 3D physical simulation test system is reliable and the test method is feasible.

Research on the variation in soil water, heat, and salt in unsaturated zones during the freeze–thaw process has great significance in efficiently utilizing water resources and preventing soil salinization. The freeze–thaw field experiment was carried out with the lysimeter as the test equipment to analyze characteristics of the soil freeze–thaw process, profile water content, main ion content, and salt content of three textured soils with the groundwater table depth of 0.5 m. The results showed that the soil temperature gradient and freezing depth were greater as the average soil particle size increased. The increment of water content at the depth of 0 to 30 cm in sandy loam and loamy sand decreased by 40.20~93.10% and 28.14~65.52% compared with that in sandy soil, and the average increment of salt content at the depth of 0 to 30 cm decreased as the average soil particle size increased during the freeze–thaw period. The average content of Ca2+, Na+, Cl−, and SO42− in loamy sand and sandy soil decreased by 4.37~45.50% and 22.60~70.42% compared with that in sandy loam at the end of the freeze–thaw period, and the correlation between soil salt content and water content decreased with the increase in the average soil particle size. The research results can provide a theoretical basis for soil salinization prevention and crop production in shallow groundwater areas.

In this paper, a rock dynamic and static triaxial mechanical test system is adopted to conduct triaxial compression failure acoustic emission test on coal rock with outburst-proneness. The purpose is to study the evolution law of the acoustic emission (AE) b value of coal rock under static and dynamic load of varying frequencies. The test results show that the dynamic load disturbance will accelerate the instability failure process of coal rock, that the average stress level/ultimate strain of coal rock decline/rises correspondingly with the increasing dynamic load frequency. Moreover, the overall AE b value after dynamic load disturbance is relatively low, and the higher the dynamic load frequency, the larger the decrease in the b value. In addition, as the dynamic load frequency increases, the AE ringing count and AE energy show a trend of first increasing and then decreasing, and they are negatively correlated with the evolution characteristics of the acoustic emission b value. Furthermore, the change rule of AE b value is closely related to the instability and failure process of coal rock. A second-stage of the overall b value of acoustic emission shows a “cliff jumping type” decrease dip angle or “fault cliff type” decrease dip angle indicates the imminent failure of coal rock, which can be used as an evaluation index for real-time monitoring of dynamic disasters of coal rock with outburst-proneness.
