Low-temperature CO oxidation over a compositional series of Pd-Au nanoalloy catalysts supported on silica fume was studied. Except for the pure metals, these materials invariably showed biphasic separation into palladium- and gold-rich components. Performance was optimal for a catalyst of bulk composition Pd(4)Au(1), a mixture of Pd(90)Au(10) (72.5 at. %) and Pd(31)Au(69) (27.5 at. %), that was remarkably active at 300 K and more stable than a pure Au catalyst. For bulk materials dominated by Pd (Pd:Au = 16:1; 8:1; 4:1), the palladium-rich alloy fraction frequently adopted hollow sphere or annular morphology, while the gold-rich crystals were often multiply twinned. Quantitative powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that under the synthesis conditions used, the Au solubility limit in Pd crystals was approximately 12 at. %, while Pd was more soluble in Au (approximately 31 at. %). This was consistent with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which revealed that the surfaces of Pd-rich alloys were enriched in gold relative to the bulk composition. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectra collected during CO oxidation contained a new band at 2114 cm(-1) (attributed to linear CO-Au/Au-Pd bonds) and reduced intensity of a band at 2090 cm(-1) (arising from a linear CO-Pd bond) with escalating Au content, indicating that the Pd sites became increasingly obscured by Au. High-resolution electron micrographs (HRTEM) of the Pd-rich alloys revealed atomic scale surface defects consistent with this interpretation. These results demonstrate that gold-containing biphasic Pd nanoalloys may be highly durable alternatives for a range of catalytic reactions.

Hydrogen oxidation on Pt (111) surface is modeled by density functional theory (DFT). Previous DFT calculations showed too large O2 dissociation barriers, but we find them highly coverage dependent: when the coverage is low, dissociation barriers close to experimental values (approximately 0.3 eV) are obtained. For the whole reaction, a new pathway involving hydroperoxyl (OOH) intermediate is found, with the highest reaction barrier of only approximately 0.4 eV. This may explain the experimental observation of catalytic water formation on Pt (111) surface above the H2O desorption temperature of 170 K, despite that the direct reaction between chemisorbed O and H atoms is a highly activated process with barrier approximately 1 eV as previous calculations showed.

Herein is reported a novel green process involving natural l-tartaric acid leaching, developed for the sustainable recovery of Mn, Li, Co, and Ni from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Operating conditions affecting the leaching efficiencies of Mn, Li, Co, and Ni, including the concentrations of l-tartaric acid (C4H6O6) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), pulp density, temperature, and leaching time, were investigated. The leaching efficiencies were 99.31% for Mn, 99.07% for Li, 98.64% for Co, and 99.31% for Ni under the optimized conditions (4 vol% H2O2, 2 M l-tartaric acid, 17 g/L pulp density, 70 °C, and 30 min). The leaching mechanism was studied preliminarily based on the structure of l-tartaric acid. The kinetics data for the leaching of Mn, Li, Co, and Ni fit best to the shrinking-core model of chemical control. For the first stage, the activation energies (E as) for the leaching of Mn, Li, Co, and Ni were 66.00, 54.03, 58.18, and 73.28 kJ/mol, respectively. For the second stage, the E as for the leaching of Mn, Li, Co, and Ni were 55.68, 53.86, 58.94, and 47.78 kJ/mol, respectively. The proposed hydrometallurgical process was found to be simple, efficient, and environmentally friendly.

The effects of short-range attraction in metal epitaxial growth are studied. Our results indicate that even at normal incidence, the short-range attraction of depositing atoms to step edges can significantly increase the selected mound angle and surface roughness for typical energies used in epitaxial growth. Our results also lead to a picture of the process of deposition near step edges that is quite different from the standard downward funneling picture. Results for the dependence of the uphill current on incident atom kinetic energy and substrate temperature are also presented.
