With increasing demand of agricultural production and as the peak in global production will occur in the next decades, phosphorus (P) is receiving more attention as a nonrenewable resource (Cordell et al., 2009;Gilbert, 2009). One unique characteristic of P is its low availability due to slow diffusion and high fixation in soils. All of this means that P can be a major limiting factor for plant growth. Applications of chemical P fertilizers and animal manure to agricultural land have improved soil P fertility and crop production, but caused environmental damage in the past decades. Maintaining a proper P-supplying level at the root zone can maximize the efficiency of plant roots to mobilize and acquire P from the rhizosphere by an integration of root morphological and physiological adaptive strategies. Furthermore, P uptake and utilization by plants plays a vital role in the determination of final crop yield. A holistic understanding of P dynamics from soil to plant is necessary for optimizing P management and improving P-use efficiency, aiming at reducing consumption of chemical P fertilizer, maximizing exploitation of the biological potential of root/rhizosphere processes for efficient mobilization, and acquisition of soil P by plants as well as recycling P from manure and waste. Taken together, overall P dynamics in the soilplant system is a function of the integrative effects of P transformation, availability, and utilization caused by soil, rhizosphere, and plant processes. This Update focuses on the dynamic processes determining P availability in the soil and in the rhizosphere, P mobilization, uptake, and utilization by plants. It highlights recent advances in the understanding of the P dynamics in the soil/rhizosphere-plant continuum.
SummaryIntercropping is a farming practice involving two or more crop species, or genotypes, growing together and coexisting for a time. On the fringes of modern intensive agriculture, intercropping is important in many subsistence or low-input/resource-limited agricultural systems. By allowing genuine yield gains without increased inputs, or greater stability of yield with decreased inputs, intercropping could be one route to delivering 'sustainable intensification'. We discuss how recent knowledge from agronomy, plant physiology and ecology can be combined with the aim of improving intercropping systems. Recent advances in agronomy and plant physiology include better understanding of the mechanisms of interactions between crop genotypes and speciesfor example, enhanced resource availability through niche complementarity. Ecological advances include better understanding of the context-dependency of interactions, the mechanisms behind disease and pest avoidance, the links between above-and below-ground systems, and the role of microtopographic variation in coexistence. This improved understanding can guide approaches for improving intercropping systems, including breeding crops for intercropping. Although such advances can help to improve intercropping systems, we suggest that other topics also need addressing. These include better assessment of the wider benefits of intercropping in terms of multiple ecosystem services, collaboration with agricultural engineering, and more effective interdisciplinary research.
Over the last 50 years, the use of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers has increased at a faster rate than global food production, resulting in substantial decreases of N and P efficiency in agriculture (Fig. 1). Thus, considerable amounts of N and P fertilizers have been wasted in agroecosystems, and the alteration of N and P biogeochemical cycles is among the most visible impacts of human activities on ecosystem services, far exceeding the hypothesized "planetary boundaries" for N and approaching those for P (Rockström et al., 2009). Projections for the future suggest that a substantial further increase in N and P fertilizer use will occur to cope with increasing food demand (Tilman et al., 2001;Vance et al., 2003). Tilman et al. (2001) predicted that global consumption of fertilizer P will increase from 34.
Sustainably feeding the world's growing population is a challenge, and closing yield gaps (that is, differences between farmers' yields and what are attainable for a given region) is a vital strategy to address this challenge. The magnitude of yield gaps is particularly large in developing countries where smallholder farming dominates the agricultural landscape. Many factors and constraints interact to limit yields, and progress in problem-solving to bring about changes at the ground level is rare. Here we present an innovative approach for enabling smallholders to achieve yield and economic gains sustainably via the Science and Technology Backyard (STB) platform. STB involves agricultural scientists living in villages among farmers, advancing participatory innovation and technology transfer, and garnering public and private support. We identified multifaceted yield-limiting factors involving agronomic, infrastructural, and socioeconomic conditions. When these limitations and farmers' concerns were addressed, the farmers adopted recommended management practices, thereby improving production outcomes. In one region in China, the five-year average yield increased from 67.9% of the attainable level to 97.0% among 71 leading farmers, and from 62.8% to 79.6% countywide (93,074 households); this was accompanied by resource and economic benefits.
