Object detection is an important and challenging problem in computer vision. Although the past decade has witnessed major advances in object detection in natural scenes, such successes have been slow to aerial imagery, not only because of the huge variation in the scale, orientation and shape of the object instances on the earth's surface, but also due to the scarcity of wellannotated datasets of objects in aerial scenes. To advance object detection research in Earth Vision, also known as Earth Observation and Remote Sensing, we introduce a large-scale Dataset for Object deTection in Aerial images (DOTA). To this end, we collect 2806 aerial images from different sensors and platforms. Each image is of the size about 4000 × 4000 pixels and contains objects exhibiting a wide variety of scales, orientations, and shapes. These DOTA images are then annotated by experts in aerial image interpretation using 15 common object categories. The fully annotated DOTA images contains 188, 282 instances, each of which is labeled by an arbitrary (8 d.o.f.) quadrilateral. To build a baseline for object detection in Earth Vision, we evaluate state-of-the-art object detection algorithms on DOTA. Object detection in aerial images is an active yet challenging task in computer vision because of the birdview perspective, the highly complex backgrounds, and the variant appearances of objects. Especially when detecting densely packed objects in aerial images, methods relying on horizontal proposals for common object detection often introduce mismatches between the Region of Interests (RoIs) and objects. This leads to the common misalignment between the final object classification confidence and localization accuracy. Although rotated anchors have been used to tackle this problem, the design of them always multiplies the number of anchors and dramatically increases the computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a RoI Transformer to address these problems. More precisely, to improve the quality of region proposals, we first designed a Rotated RoI (RRoI) learner to transform a Horizontal Region of Interest (HRoI) into a Rotated Region of Interest (RRoI). Based on the RRoIs, we then proposed a Rotated Position Sensitive RoI Align (RPS-RoI-Align) module to extract rotation-invariant features from them for boosting subsequent classification and regression. Our RoI Transformer is with light weight and can be easily embedded into detectors for oriented object detection. A simple implementation of the RoI Transformer has achieved state-of-the-art performances on two common and challenging aerial datasets, i.e., DOTA and HRSC2016, with a neglectable reduction to detection speed. Our RoI Transformer exceeds the deformable Position Sensitive RoI pooling when oriented bounding-box annotations are available. Extensive experiments have also validated the flexibility and effectiveness of our RoI Transformer. The results demonstrate that it can be easily integrated with other detector architectures and significantly improve the performances.

The past decade has witnessed significant progress on detecting objects in aerial images that are often distributed with large scale variations and arbitrary orientations. However most of existing methods rely on heuristically defined anchors with different scales, angles and aspect ratios and usually suffer from severe misalignment between anchor boxes and axis-aligned convolutional features, which leads to the common inconsistency between the classification score and localization accuracy. To address this issue, we propose a Single-shot Alignment Network (S 2 A-Net) consisting of two modules: a Feature Alignment Module (FAM) and an Oriented Detection Module (ODM). The FAM can generate high-quality anchors with an Anchor Refinement Network and adaptively align the convolutional features according to the anchor boxes with a novel Alignment Convolution. The ODM first adopts active rotating filters to encode the orientation information and then produces orientation-sensitive and orientation-invariant features to alleviate the inconsistency between classification score and localization accuracy. Besides, we further explore the approach to detect objects in large-size images, which leads to a better trade-off between speed and accuracy. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method can achieve state-of-the-art performance on two commonly used aerial objects datasets (i.e., DOTA and HRSC2016) while keeping high efficiency. In the past decade, object detection has achieved significant progress in natural images but not in aerial images, due to the massive variations in the scale and orientation of objects caused by the bird's-eye view of aerial images. More importantly, the lack of large-scale benchmarks has become a major obstacle to the development of object detection in aerial images (ODAI). In this paper, we present a large-scale Dataset of Object deTection in Aerial images (DOTA) and comprehensive baselines for ODAI. The proposed DOTA dataset contains 1,793,658 object instances of 18 categories of oriented-bounding-box annotations collected from 11,268 aerial images. Based on this large-scale and well-annotated dataset, we build baselines covering 10 state-of-the-art algorithms with over 70 configurations, where the speed and accuracy performances of each model have been evaluated. Furthermore, we provide a code library for ODAI and build a website for evaluating different algorithms. Previous challenges run on DOTA have attracted more than 1300 teams worldwide. We believe that the expanded large-scale DOTA dataset, the extensive baselines, the code library and the challenges can facilitate the designs of robust algorithms and reproducible research on the problem of object detection in aerial images.

Object detection in aerial images is a fundamental yet challenging task in remote sensing field. As most objects in aerial images are in arbitrary orientations, oriented bounding boxes (OBBs) have a great superiority compared with traditional horizontal bounding boxes (HBBs). However, the regression-based OBB detection methods always suffer from ambiguity in the definition of learning targets, which will decrease the detection accuracy. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive analysis of OBB representations and cast the OBB regression as a pixel-level classification problem, which can largely eliminate the ambiguity. The predicted masks are subsequently used to generate OBBs. To handle huge scale changes of objects in aerial images, an Inception Lateral Connection Network (ILCN) is utilized to enhance the Feature Pyramid Network (FPN). Furthermore, a Semantic Attention Network (SAN) is adopted to provide the semantic feature, which can help distinguish the object of interest from the cluttered background effectively. Empirical studies show that the entire method is simple yet efficient. Experimental results on two widely used datasets, i.e., DOTA and HRSC2016, demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods.
