The offshore wind market demands a higher power rate and more reliable turbines in order to optimize capital and operational costs. The state-of-the-art shows that both geared and direct-drive conventional generators are difficult to scale up to 10 MW and beyond due to their huge size and weight. Superconducting direct-drive wind generators are considered a promising solution to achieve lighter weight machines. This work presents an innovative 10 MW 8.1 rpm direct-drive partial superconducting generator using MgB2 wire for the field coils. It has a warm iron rotor configuration with the superconducting coils working at 20 K while the rotor core and the armature are at ambient temperature. A cooling system based on cryocoolers installed in the rotor extracts the heat from the superconducting coils by conduction. The generator’s main parameters are compared against a permanent magnet reference machine, showing a significant weight and size reduction. The 10 MW superconducting generator concept will be experimentally validated with a small-scale magnetic machine, which has innovative components such as superconducting coils, modular cryostats and cooling systems, and will have similar size and characteristics as the 10 MW generator.

Eukaryotic transmembrane helical (TMH) proteins perform a wide diversity of critical cellular functions, but remain structurally largely uncharacterized and their high-resolution structure prediction is currently hindered by the lack of close structural homologues. To address this problem, we present a novel and generic method for accurately modeling large TMH protein structures from distant homologues exhibiting distinct loop and TMH conformations. Models of the adenosine A2AR and chemokine CXCR4 receptors were first ranked in GPCR-DOCK blind prediction contests in the receptor structure accuracy category. In a benchmark of 50 TMH protein homolog pairs of diverse topology (from 5 to 12 TMHs), size (from 183 to 420 residues) and sequence identity (from 15% to 70%), the method improves most starting templates, and achieves near-atomic accuracy prediction of membrane-embedded regions. Unlike starting templates, the models are of suitable quality for computer-based protein engineering: redesigned models and redesigned X-ray structures exhibit very similar native interactions. The method should prove useful for the atom-level modeling and design of a large fraction of structurally uncharacterized TMH proteins from a wide range of structural homologues.

Circularly polarized light (CPL) is key to asymmetric photochemistry as it could impart the chiral organization information into chemical products. Here, we demonstrate the circular polarization capacity of chiral cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) films to trigger photo-alignment of achiral supramolecular polymers into helical structures. Right-handed transmitted (T-) CPL was generated from self-assembled CNC films, which induced amorphous azobenzene (Azo) supramolecular polymers into chiral structures. The chiral induction effect of T-CPL is enhanced on Azo polymers with longer spacers. The absorptive dissymmetry factor (g abs ) values of liquid-crystal supramolecular polymers can be amplified significantly (over 10 times) after T-CPL irradiation. Moreover, by integrating carbon dots into CNC films, CPL emission with a considerable luminescence dissymmetry factor (g lum ) up to À 0.66 was achieved, and it could be used for the photoalignment of Azo polymers with high chiroptical properties. This work provides new insight for the photo modulation of supramolecular polymers by CPL-active materials.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most common internal modification in mRNAs of all higher eukaryotes. Here we perform two high-throughput sequencing methods, m6Amodified RNA immunoprecipitation sequence (MeRIP-seq) and RNA sequence (RNAseq) to identify key genes with m6A modification in cashmere fiber growth. A total of 9,085 m6A sites were differentially RNA m6A methylated as reported from by MeRIP-seq, including 7,170 upregulated and 1,915 downregulated. In addition, by comparing m6Amodified genes between the fine-type Liaoning cashmere goat (FT-LCG) and coarse-type Liaoning Cashmere Goat (CT-LCG) skin samples, we obtain 1,170 differentially expressed genes. In order to identify the differently methylated genes related to cashmere fiber growth, 19 genes were selected to validate by performing qRT-PCR in FT-LCG and CT-LCG. In addition, GO enrichment analysis shows that differently methylated genes are mainly involved in keratin filament and intermediate filament. These findings provide a theoretical basis for future research on the function of m6A modification during the growth of cashmere fiber.

To improve the thermal properties and mechanical properties of synthetic biodegradable polymers, poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and poly(hexamethylene isophthalamide-co-terephthalamide) (PA6IcoT) are reactively blended in a LIST corotating processor under melting conditions. The products are fractionated into insoluble and soluble parts using chloroform as the solvent. The Fourier transform infrared spectra of these two fractions confirm that the exchange reaction between PA6IcoT and PBS occurs when p-toluenesulfonic acid is used as the catalyst. On the basis of the 13C NMR analysis, the pathway of the exchange reaction is described. The extent of exchange reaction, average length of the various sequences, and degree of randomness in the reactive blends are calculated. It has been found that the randomness of copolymers is increased with the increase in reaction extent. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is employed to investigate morphology development of the reactive blends. It shows that the copolymers generated by the exchange reaction act as the compatibilizer to improve the compatibility of PBS and PA6IcoT. The fraction of PA6IcoT- and PBS-rich phases is significantly reduced with increasing reaction extent.
