Background: This study was conducted to examine job stress, sleep quality, and fatigue and identify major variables that influence work engagement in order to develop an intervention program for shift duty nurses to enhance their work engagement. Methods: The subjects of this study were 170 nurses working with shift duty at one university hospital and one general hospital located in G city. Data were collected from February to March 2018 with structured questionnaires, and analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. Results: The mean scores of job stress, sleep quality, fatigue, and work engagement were 3.87, 1.57, 4.64, and 2.36, respectively. The work engagement was negatively correlated with job stress, sleep quality, and fatigue. The most powerful variable influencing work engagement was sleep quality and the model showed explanatory power of 22.5%. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that the quality of sleep is most important factor affecting work engagement of shift nurses. This study suggest that it is necessary a variety of strategies in order to improve the quality of sleep and to intervene in job stress and fatigue, eventually lead to enhancing nursing performance.
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most researched metabolic diseases worldwide. It leads to extensive complications such as cardiovascular disease, nephropathy, retinopathy, and peripheral and central nervous system through an inability to produce or respond to insulin. Although oxidative stress-mediated mitophagy has been reported to play an important role in the pathogenesis of DM, specific studies are still lacking as well as remain highly controversial. Here, we found that Parkin-mediated mitophagy in pancreatic β cells under streptozotocin (STZ)-diabetic stress was induced by Polo-like kinase 3 (Plk3) and inhibited by the transcription factor Forkhead Box O3A (FOXO3A). STZ stress induces mitochondrial recruitment of Parkin through Plk3-mediated mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, which causes pancreatic cell damage. Conversely, FOXO3A acts as negative feedback to prevent diabetic stress by inhibiting Plk3. Meanwhile, antioxidants including N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and natural COA water scientifically block these mitochondrial ROS and mitochondrial recruitment of Parkin by inhibiting Plk3. Through a 3D organoid ex vivo model, we confirmed that not only ROS inhibitors but also mitophagy inhibitory factors such as 3-MA or Parkin deletion can compensate for pancreatic cell growth and insulin secretion under STZ diabetic stress. These findings suggest that the Plk3-mtROS-PINK1-Parkin axis is a novel mitophagy process that inhibits pancreatic β-cell growth and insulin secretion and FOXO3A and antioxidants may provide new alternatives for effective diabetes treatment strategies in the future.
This study aimed to analyze the moderating effect of sleep quality and the moderated moderation effect of education level on the relationship between depression and suicidal ideations among middle-aged parents of adolescent children. This is a secondary analysis of a survey collected from a cross-sectional study. The inclusion criteria were middle-aged parents of adolescent children in D city, South Korea, who answered the survey questionnaires. A total of 178 completed questionnaires were used for the analysis. The moderating effect of sleep quality (B = −0.03, p = 0.736) and education level (B = −1.80, p = 0.029) on the relationship between depression and suicidal ideations was shown. It was confirmed that the moderating effect of sleep quality on the effect of depression on suicidal ideations differed according to the subject’s education level. The findings have implications for mental healthcare providers who can be educated on sleep hygiene based on the subject’s education level.
