This work aimed to carry out a study of Apodanthera congestiflora by investigating its chemical composition and pharmacological potential. From the dichloromethane phase (Dic-Ac) of the A. congestiflora stems, three compounds were identified: cayaponoside C5b (Ac-1), cabenoside C (Ac-2) and fevicordin C2 glucoside (Ac-3), being last identified for the first time as a natural product. These compounds were obtained by chromatographic methods and their structures were elucidated by means of spectroscopic analysis of IR, MS and NMR. In the quantification of Dic-Ac, it was possible to observe the presence of 7% of cayaponoside C5b. Dic-Ac showed significant toxicity for in vivo tests, with macroscopic and biochemical changes. The anti-inflammatory activity of Dic-Ac was investigated using the paw edema model. A decrease in inflammatory signs was observed in the first 5 h and the most effective dose in reducing edema with was 7.5 mg kg−1 (66.6%). Anti-tumor activity of Dic-Ac was evaluated by Ehrlich’s carcinoma model, which showed inhibition rate of 78.46% at 15 mg kg−1 dosage. The phytochemical investigation, together with the biological tests carried out in this study, demonstrated that A. congestiflora is a promising species in the search for therapeutics, since it contains substances with high pharmacological potential in its composition.
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Treponema pallidum. The infection is chronic and characterized by periods of intermittent latency, generating primary, secondary and tertiary stages of the disease. It is transmitted predominantly via sexual route, but vertical transmission, from a pregnant woman to the developing fetus or during childbirth, can occur. Parenteral transmission is also possible, however on a smaller scale. The present study aimed to contextualize T. pallidum infection and provide a descriptive epidemiological analysis of the distribution of cases of the disease in the state of Paraíba, in Brazil, according to age group, sex, education, race/ethnicity and cities with the highest concentration of confirmed cases. Between 2015 and 2021, a total of 6150 cases of acquired syphilis were reported. The year of 2019 concentrated the highest number of cases of the disease (1820), with 29.58%. Brown individuals were responsible for 3586 cases (58.31%), men comprised 4016 cases (65.30%), the age group 20-39 years had 3668 cases (59.64%), people with complete high school presented 825 cases, but there was a significant percentage of notifications as "ignored/blank", comprising 2928 cases in the variable "education" and significantly hindering the interpretation of data.
This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and toxicity potential of the hydroalcoholic extract of the leaves of L. racemosa (EHALr) a mangrove plant. The results showed that the extract was able to promote moderate antioxidant activity. In acute toxicity assays, EHA-Lr showed low toxicity, with no significant changes in animal and organ weights and in biochemical and hematological parameters. In the evaluation of anti-inflammatory activity, the 200 mg/kg dose of EHA-Lr was most effective in reducing leukocyte migration in the paw edema model and in the LPS-induced acute lung inflammation model the 50 mg/kg dose was most effective in reducing plantar volume. The antimicrobial potential of the hydroalcoholic extract was observed against Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcencens, Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis strains, proving to be effective. However, the extract was most active against the Micrococcus luteus strain (0.93mg/mL). The hydroalcoholic extract of L. racemosa leaves showed anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities, with low toxicity, which makes it a strong promise to be applied or combined in clinical therapy.
