El presente estudio explora la importancia de la adherencia terapéutica en el tratamiento de personas con enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles, a partir de artículos científicos sobre el tema y específicamente en diabetes tipo 2 e hipertensión arterial. El objetivo es reconocer evidencias encontradas por investigaciones de diferentes autores, sobre importancia y factores de la adherencia farmacológica y no farmacológica en personas con las condiciones anteriores. Los estudios de esta revisión bibliográfica son publicaciones recientes de países latinoamericanos y España. La metodología cualitativa aplicada en este estudio, pone énfasis en el enfoque de los estudios y al involucramiento del personal de salud, respecto a la adherencia terapéutica. Predomina el hallazgo de niveles bajos y falta de adherencia que conlleva un elevado índice de complicaciones y mortalidad en relación a los pacientes cumplidores, además las tasas de hospitalización son más altas en pacientes con baja adherencia. Se requiere identificar menos la aplicación de estrategias sencillas para promover planes de cuidados integrales, que optimicen la eficacia de las intervenciones y se incremente la adherencia terapéutica. Esta revisión indica que el equipo de salud debe mantener la comunicación con el usuario, instruyéndolo sobre la importancia de controles para prevenir o tratar enfermedades a través de una buena práctica de enfermería con el fin de minimizar el índice de complicaciones y mortalidad ocasionada por la hipertensión y diabetes.
