Introdução: O conceito de Cuidados Paliativos (CP) vem, ao longo dos anos, sofrendo atualizações em seu significado, assim como as abordagens terapêuticas, tendo se estendido para diversas condições crônicas. O modelo preexistente de CP passou por um processo de ressignificação para atender o público pediátrico, uma vez que não correspondia plenamente às necessidades específicas dessa faixa etária. Objetivo: Caracterizar as crianças com doenças crônicas, elegíveis para cuidados paliativos internadas em um hospital universitário. Método: Estudo transversal de abordagem quantitativa, desenvolvido em um hospital universitário público, de alta complexidade, do sul do Brasil. A população de estudo foi composta por 101 crianças de 0-14 anos internadas de novembro de 2018 a março de 2019. Resultados: 51,4% dos participantes eram do sexo feminino, a faixa etária prevalente foi dos 0-5 anos de idade (64,3%). Do total de participantes, 45 (44,5%) eram portadores de condições crônicas, sendo que destes, 28 eram elegíveis para CP. Entretanto, somente 14 (50,0%) recebiam assistência nesta perspectiva. Conclusão: O estudo identificou um número expressivo de crianças portadoras de condições crônicas e sua inserção tardia em CP quando elegíveis. Notou-se a escassez de pesquisas nacionais que abordem CP quando voltados a essas crianças.
