LED scraps consisting of highly crystalline GaN and their leaching behavior are comprehensively investigated for hydro-metallurgical recovery of rare metals. Highly stable GaN renders the leaching of the LED scraps extremely difficult in ordinary acidic and basic media. More favorable state can be obtained by way of high temperature solid-gas reaction of GaN-Na2CO3 powder mixture, ball-milled thoroughly at room temperature and subsequently oxidized under ambient air environment at 1000-1200 ℃ in a horizontal tube furnace, where GaN was effectively oxidized into gallium oxides. Stoichiometry analysis reveals that GaN is completely transformed into gallium oxides with Ga contents of ~73 wt%. Accordingly, the oxidized powder can be suitably leached to ~96% efficiency in a boiling 4 M HCl solution, experimentally confirming the feasibility of Ga recycling system development.

AbstractIn this study, we have investigated solvent extraction of Ga and recovery of high pure Ga solution from MOCVD dust for manufacturing of LED chip. Effect of extractan, concentration of extractant were examined for choosing the more effective extractant and high pure Ga solution was fabricated by multi-stage extraction/stripping process. For extraction/separation of Ga based on the analysis of raw-material in previous study, 3 different extractants PC 99A, DP-8R, Cyanex 272 has been investigated and the extraction efficiency of 1.5 M Cyanex 272 was 43.8%. It was conformed that extraction efficiency of Ga was 83% in multi-stage extraction and 5N high purity Ga stripping solution without impurities also obtained.
Caustic (NaOH) solution is used to remove H2S from hydrocarbon streams in petroleum refining industry, gradually being, so called, spent sulfidic caustic (SSC) which has high levels of H2S and alkalinity. Thus, SSC can be used as an electron donor and a buffering agent for autotrophic denitrification. As SSC, however, contains some non-biodegradable organics, air stripping was conducted to remove the non-biodegradable organics. As a result, over 93 % of the non-biodegradable organics was removed within 30 min of aeration. Then, Na2S2O3·5H2O, methanol and organic matters, which are produced from a biodiesel production plant, were added to reform the air-stripped SSC and their products being referred to new sulfidic caustics (NSCs)Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ, respectively. Thereafter, to investigate the effect of these products on the removal of COD and TN, these products were injected to a biological nitrogen removal (BNR) process, resulting in additional 44 % TN removal without noticeable increase in the effluent COD level. Therefore, it can be said that the BNR process is a promising option to treat NSC as demonstrated in this study whose results can be useful for developing resource recovery technologies.
