La reparación por parcheo de una estructura de hormigón armado afectada por corrosión es una operación compleja que requiere una importante inversión económica. Es dicha necesidad de disminuir los costes por parte de la entidad responsable la que condiciona en gran medida la extensión de la intervención sucediendo que, en la mayoría de ocasiones, se reparan únicamente las zonas visiblemente degradadas dejándose sin reparar zonas aparentemente sanas. Ese criterio restrictivo puede ser totalmente inadecuado, al poder estar dejando sin sanear, en zonas adyacentes a las reparadas, un hormigón con un alto contenido del agente más agresivo en estos procesos de corrosión, que es el ion cloruro. Ello puede originar nuevos procesos de corrosión en un plazo de pocos años, limitando severamente la durabilidad de la reparación efectuada. Este artículo describe el uso en obra de un equipo portátil de fluorescencia_de_rayos_X (FRX) para la cuantificación de cloruros en muestras de hormigón extraídas de diferentes zonas de una estructura afectada por corrosión. Se analizan tanto zonas degradadas como zonas aparentemente sanas. Teniendo en cuenta el valor límite de concentración de cloruros propuesto por la EHE a partir del cual se considera que una concentración de dicho ion es perjudicial, se pueden delimitar con un criterio más adecuado las zonas a reparar, extendiendo la intervención a zonas adyacentes a las claramente dañadas, aparentemente sanas, pero en las que la concentración de cloruros en el hormigón supera dicho límite. Los equipos portátiles FRX hasta ahora no habían sido empleados en el estudio de procesos patológicos de estructuras de hormigón. Sin embargo, resultan una herramienta muy útil en diagnóstico de procesos de deterioro de una estructura degradada por corrosión por cloruros en la armadura de acero y de uso fundamental para delimitar de manera objetiva las áreas de actuación, limpieza, renovación y reparación del hormigón.
