El pasto Urochloa híbrido cultivar Cobra es de reciente introducción al trópico mexicano y se desconoce la dinámica del ciclo de vida de los tallos, aspecto relacionado con la producción forrajera y la persistencia. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar el comportamiento de este pasto a cuatro tiempos de corte. Se hipotetizó que realizar cortes de forraje con base en la cantidad de luz interceptada por el dosel favorece la dinámica. Los tratamientos aplicados fueron cortes al alcanzar 90, 95 y 100 % de intercepción luminosa (IL) y un corte a un tiempo fijo. El estudio se estableció en 2017 bajo un diseño de bloques completos al azar con cuatro repeticiones en Medellín, Veracruz, México. Los tallos se contaron mensualmente en círculos de 20.32 cm de diámetro. Las tasas de aparición de tallos (TAT), supervivencia (TST), muerte (TMT), así como el índice de estabilidad (IE) no fueron afectados (P > 0.05) por el tiempo al corte; el efecto mayor fue por la estación del año (P ≤ 0.001) y sólo se tuvo interacción estación × tratamientos para TAT e IE (P ≤ 0.05). La TAT y la TST fueron mayores (P ≤ 0.05) en verano y otoño entre 62 y 76 %. La TMT menor (P ≤ 0.05) fue en verano y alcanzó 43 %. La densidad poblacional de tallos (DPT) fue afectada por el tiempo al corte (P ≤ 0.0001) y la estación (P ≤ 0.0001), se encontró que cortar a 90 % IL indujo mayor DPT (P ≤ 0.05) con 2048 tallos m-2, mientras que cortes a tiempo fijo y a 100 % IL tuvieron la menor población (882 y 1271 tallos m-2, respectivamente). La dinámica de tallos en este pasto es mayormente influenciada por las condiciones ambientales de acuerdo con la estación del año; no obstante, realizar cortes a 90 % IL induce mayor DPT.
