Falls with injury are a persistent patient safety challenge in the acute care setting. This article describes the creation and implementation of a Certified Falls Prevention Advocate (CFPA) program on a medical-surgical unit. The program created standardization of nursing support staff involvement in falls prevention and engaged them as members of the interdisciplinary team. The CFPA program was an important element in the unit's improvement in falls with injury rates. The mean falls with injury rate decreased from 1.115 to 0.178 per 1000 patient-days over a 1-year period.
Strategic plans provide a roadmap for value creation by outlining key priorities that, when executed successfully, enhance quality and efficiency. Nurses are uniquely positioned to inform strategic planning because of their understanding of clinical operations and consumer needs. This article describes a multiphase process for engaging nurses, at all levels, in developing, implementing, and revising a nursing strategic plan over a 5-year period.Strategy is a tool leaders use to distinguish their organization within an industry or market. Typically, this distinction is achieved through the development and execution of a strategic plan that defines how the organization will deliver a superior service or product to consumers. 1 In healthcare, strategic plans provide roadmaps for creating value through optimal care delivery and improving the outcomes that matter to patients while containing the costs of delivering those outcomes, supporting the financial goals. 2 Nurses play a pivotal role in driving value. 3 For example, nurses' implementation of evidence-based standards to reduce hospital-acquired complications such as infections, pressure injuries, and falls not only optimizes patient outcomes but also reduces the cost of care. Given nurses' proximity to patients and families and their keen understanding of the operational processes that influence care delivery, nurses are uniquely positioned to inform strategic planning efforts and affect outcomes. In particular, nursing strategic plans can be used to articulate specific ways in which nurses can strengthen care delivery to create value within their organizations. The purpose of this article is to describe a multiphase process for engaging nurses, at all levels, in developing, implementing, and revising a nursing strategic plan.
