travesía trasatlántica y, mediante ella, presenta las actividades de los procuradores de la catedral de México que les daban la posibilidad de hacer escuchar las peticiones de su representada. dichos delegados tuvieron en sus manos la enorme tarea de buscar los argumentos, las situaciones propicias y los personajes que pudieran inclinar el poder real en favor de la mitra. se convirtieron en verdaderos escrutadores de los escenarios, de los momentos y de las personas adecuadas. Con ello pretendían ganar no sólo el litigio sino, paralelamente, el reconocimiento social de esos círculos de poder y la posibilidad de beneficiar su carrera personal. por tanto, la Corte se constituyó como un escenario de reclamaciones, de aplicación de la justicia y, simultáneamente, como un medio para ascender socialmente.así como los procuradores se iban insertando y profundizando en las redes cortesanas, Óscar Mazín lo ha hecho en su estudio de las catedrales novohispanas. Ya en su libro Entre dos majestades. El obispo y la iglesia del Gran Michoacán ante las reformas borbónicas, 1758-1772, 1 apuntaba la necesidad de acercarse al análisis del cabildo catedralicio para comprender el funcionamiento de la iglesia. para cumplir con su propia invitación gestó su obra, El cabildo catedral de Valladolid de Michoacán, 2 y dotó de herramientas para nuevos estudios a partir de la Guía del Archivo del Cabildo Catedral Metropolitano de México que elaboró junto con otros autores. 3 Asimismo los intereses de Óscar Mazín se ven reflejados en el artículo"La monarquía española: grupos políticos locales ante la * agradezco a la doctora pilar Martínez López-Cano la propuesta de llevar a cabo esta reseña y sus comentarios. asimismo a la doctora Leticia pérez puente las anotaciones que hizo a este trabajo.
<p>La orden de carmelitas descalzos en la Nueva España fue distinta al resto de las mendicantes: admitieron principalmente a peninsulares y, por excepción, a algún criollo; privilegiaron el repliegue interior en lugar de la convivencia y adoctrinamiento de los indios, su desempeño doctrinal sólo duró de 1586 a 1607 al abandonar la única doctrina que tuvieron en San Sebastián; sirvieron sobre todo a peninsulares, entre otras. Es por ello –y por su llegada tan tardía hasta 1585- que la historiografía ha presentado a los carmelitas al margen de los conflictos y de las pretensiones del resto del clero regular. Más aun, la distancia que se les ha atribuido respecto de los intereses de franciscanos, agustinos, dominicos y jesuitas, ha provocado que se les muestre como favorables a los proyectos de la iglesia diocesana. Sin embargo, el abandono de la doctrina de San Sebastián es un buen ejemplo para mostrar cómo, aunque los carmelitas descalzos eran una orden reformada comandando las pretensiones regias, pugnaron —al igual que las demás órdenes— por no sujetarse al clero secular, privilegio del que habían gozado desde su llegada a Indias.</p>
El Santo Desierto de los carmelitas descalzos en la Nueva España se ha estudiado como un espacio de contemplación para los frailes. Sin embargo, no se han atendido los cambios en el cometido que se pensó tendría dicho yermo. En un principio, el Desierto se adecuó a las funciones que realizarían los carmelitas en Indias, concibiéndose como un lugar de preparación para aquellos que irían a misionar al septentrión novohispano y Filipinas. No obstante, a lo largo de su proceso fundacional, el concepto misional activo se transformó por el de la intercesión y la conversión mediante la oración. Este viraje se insertó en la propia transformación que experimentó la provincia de San Alberto de carmelitas descalzos hacia 1606.Palabras clave: Provincia de San Alberto, carmelitas descalzos, misión, Santo Desierto.
La historiografía en torno a la Iglesia novohispana ha estudiado los innumerables escenarios en los que se manifestó el conflicto entre el clero regular y el secular. Precisamente, este trabajo ejemplifica cómo ése también se hizo presente en los procesos de fundación y establecimiento de los conventos de la Concepción y Santa Clara en la Ciudad de México en la segunda mitad del siglo XVI. Particularmente aborda la confrontación entre el diocesano y los franciscanos por la apropiación del espacio urbano.
