Das British Medical Journal (BMJ) ist, vergleichbar mit dem deutschen ¾rzteblatt und der Bundesärztekammer in Deutsch-land, das Fachorgan der englischen ¾rztevereinigung (BMA). Seit Mai 1995, also knapp zwei Jahre nach dem offiziellen Start des WWW-Zeitalters, ist das BMJ als bmj.com im Internet mit eigener Homepage vertreten. Diese Fachzeitschrift zählt zu den ersten medizinischen Fachjournalen mit Internetpräsenz. Vom April 1998 an ist BMJ mit Volltext im Netz vertreten und hat zur Zeit ungefähr 40.000 Zugriffe pro Woche. Damit nimmt es im Netscape-Ranking der wissenschaftlichen Webseiten einen der vorderen Plätze ein. Der Webeditor und Macher der BMJ-Seite Tony Delamothe vertritt bis jetzt den Standpunkt, dass eine frei verfügbare kostenlose Internetversion des BMJ die Auflage der Printversion
