An intervention was conducted to identify effective but feasible ways to combat the decline in physical activity (PA) among college students. One hundred forty‐six first year college students were randomly assigned to one of three brief interventions: brochures, a classroom presentation, or an in‐person demonstration. Benefiting from the study, having low perceived stress, and being in a later stage of change for PA were expected to protect against the typical decreases in PA outcomes. Declines in PA were slowed or reversed when students were influenced by the intervention, had lower stress, and were in earlier stages of change. Students may benefit from simple interventions such as one‐time seminars and brochures explaining fitness guidelines, especially if combined with a stress management intervention.

Topic Sleep deprivation in the intensive care unit setting. Clinical Relevance The Society of Critical Care Medicine has identified sleep deprivation as a significant contributor to the development of delirium in adult patients in the intensive care unit. Thus, preventing and managing sleep deprivation is important in reducing the incidence of delirium in this patient population. A multifaceted and multidisciplinary approach to promoting sleep in the intensive care unit setting that includes sleep hygiene routines, nursing care plans, and appropriate medication regimens may improve patient outcomes, including reducing delirium. Purpose of Article To review the current literature on sleep deprivation in the intensive care unit setting and present care guidelines in a concise format. This information may be helpful in the development of clinical tools and may guide future quality improvement projects aimed at reducing delirium through sleep promotion in critical care patients. Content Covered A review of current literature and national organization recommendations revealed consistent themes in addressing the problem of sleep deprivation in the intensive care unit. Modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors included frequent care interactions, light, noise, medication effects, and preexisting sleep problems.

Early progressive mobilization is the initiation of movement when a patient is hemodynamically stable, adequately oxygenated, and minimally able to participate. Early progressive mobilization has been linked to decreased morbidity and mortality as inactivity has a profound adverse effect on the brain, skin, skeletal muscle, pulmonary and cardiovascular systems. Literature supports early progressive mobilization and physical therapy as a safe and effective intervention that can have a positive impact on functional outcomes. While the benefits of early progressive mobilization in the intensive care unit have been well documented in recent years, many intensive care units are unable to effectively integrate early progressive mobilization into their daily practice. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to determine whether an educational intervention on the Early Progressive Mobilization Protocol at an urban intensive care unit in Las Vegas, Nevada affected knowledge of, skill in, and attitudes toward implementation of the protocol in practice, as well as to determine whether there was a difference in reported compliance scores among various disciplines. A pre-test survey designed to examine these variables and the reported compliance with the Early Progressive Mobilization protocol was administered. Educational sessions were provided to participants on the Early Progressive Mobilization Protocol after the pre-test. A post-test was administered after the educational session to determine the educational impact on the identified variables. Data analysis was completed using frequency distributions. Valuable insight was gained on the potential impact of targeted educational intervention. Further study is warranted to assess the effects of routine training in intensive care units with similar protocols.

The United States Preventive Task Force recommends tobacco cessation as a preventive service with a high certainty of substantial benefit. Brief intervention training for healthcare providers in treating tobacco use and dependence has been well established in the literature. Undergraduate nursing students' may be at an optimal time in their career to undergo training on appropriate tobacco cessation teaching methods. The purpose of this project was to assess the outcomes of tobacco brief intervention training for undergraduate nursing students. Outcomes include knowledge of tobacco use health and economic impact and use of brief intervention for tobacco use by undergraduate students. This study demonstrates that brief intervention training may reasonably be administered during traditional nursing school curriculum. Further studies are warranted to evaluate if this training has any impact on quality of patient instruction during patient interactions.
