This article describes how the Operational Research group in the Department of Health in England has used system dynamics modelling in several areas of health care policy and programme development and implementation. It outlines applications in disease screening and in developing emergency care. It discusses the strengths and weaknesses we have found in its application and suggests some opportunities for its development and use in the future.
