Aim: Anthropogenic activities alter and constrain the structure of marine ecosystems with implications for wide-ranging marine vertebrates. In spite of the environmental importance of vast oceanic ecosystems, most conservation efforts mainly focus on neritic areas. To identify relevant oceanic areas for conservation, we assessed the year-round spatial distribution and spatio-temporal overlap of eight truly oceanic seabird species of gadfly petrels (Pterodroma spp.) inhabiting the Atlantic Ocean. Location: Atlantic Ocean.Methods: Using tracking data (mostly from geolocators), we examined year-round distributions, the timing of life-cycle events, and marine habitat overlap of eight gadfly petrel species that breed in the Atlantic Ocean. Results:We compiled 125 year-round tracks. Movement strategies ranged from nonmigratory to long-distance migrant species and from species sharing a common nonbreeding area to species dispersing among multiple non-breeding sites. Gadfly petrels occurred throughout the Atlantic Ocean but tended to concentrate in subtropical regions. During the boreal summer, up to three species overlapped spatio-temporally over a large area around the Azores archipelago. During the austral summer, up to four species coincided in a core area in subtropical waters around Cape Verde, and three species shared habitat over two distinct areas off Brazil. SummaryThe Bermuda Petrel Pterodroma cahow was thought to have become extinct early in the 17 th century due to a combination of hunting by human colonists and predation by introduced rats, cats, dogs and pigs. However, single individuals were found on four occasions during the first half of the 20 th century, and in 1951 a small population was discovered breeding on several rocky islets in north-east Bermuda. Recovery actions began in 1962 when the population numbered just 18 pairs, dispersed among five small islets. Although rats extirpated one of these five colonies in 1967, the population has grown steadily to 56 breeding pairs in 2000. Past studies have indicated that Pacific rats Rattus exulans are significant predators of the chicks of surface-breeding seabirds, namely gadfly petrels Pterodroma spp., on Henderson Island, central South Pacific. Further fieldwork in 2003 confirmed the heavy predation of chicks of Murphy's petrel P. ultima by rats. By extension, heavy predation is also likely each year on the endangered Henderson petrel P. atrata, for which Henderson Island is the only confirmed breeding site. To assess how important petrels are in the overall diet of rats, we conducted stable isotope analyses of rats from the shore, where petrels are most concentrated, and from about 1 km inland, where fewer nest. The carbon isotope results suggested that inland rats obtain about 30% of their food from marine sources, while the figure for shore rats was about 40%. We consider factors that may have acted to inflate these proportions. If, as suggested by these results, petrels are not the predominant component of the rats' diet, then rat populations and hence rat predation on petrels may not diminish even if petrel populations decrease further. In the light of probable low annual breeding success, we drew on vital rate information for the cahow P. cahow to model changes in the Henderson petrel population, and found a negative growth rate (λ = 0.9918) under present conditions. Growth rate became positive if annual adult survival rose above 0.95 or breeding success above 0.25, the latter unlikely while rats remain on Henderson. We conclude that the Henderson petrel population will probably continue to decline in the absence of conservation intervention.

SummaryUntil recently, Bermuda Petrel Pterodroma cahow (IUCN Category: ‘Endangered’) bred only in sub-optimal habitat on four small islets in north-east Bermuda. Although intensive management of the population since 1962 has led to a substantial increase in population size (now approaching 100 pairs), the nesting habitat on these four islets is being increasingly inundated, eroded and destroyed by high seas associated with hurricanes and storms. To ensure the long-term conservation of the species a decision was made to establish a new colony at a more secure site on nearby Nonsuch Island, where they once bred in large numbers. Between 2004 and 2008, 104 near-fledged nestlings were translocated to artificial burrows on Nonsuch Island, where they were hand-fed meals of fish and squid. All but three translocated birds fledged successfully, with the first returning to Nonsuch Island in February 2008. The first Bermuda Petrel egg on Nonsuch Island in more than 300 years was laid in January 2009, and the resultant fledgling departed in June of the same year. By the end of the 2009/10 breeding season, a total of 18 Bermuda Petrels have been recorded on Nonsuch Island, 17 were translocated as near-fledged nestlings, and one bird came from the existing colonies. A total of five eggs have been produced, resulting in two fledglings. The establishment of this new colony, at a site that is much more secure than the existing nesting sites, greatly enhances the conservation prospects of the species and demonstrates the importance of translocation as a tool for the conservation of threatened seabirds.
