Caring for young infants can be stressful. Non-accidental brain or head injury (shaken baby syndrome) is a result of parental stress, and a lack of knowledge of how to respond to a crying infant and the dangers of shaking a child. This article demonstrates the value of international collaboration in projects to prevent child maltreatment. It includes reports of prevention of shaken baby syndrome programmes in Australia, Hungary, Greece, Brazil and Turkey.
We explored the promotion of active citizenship through reports of engagement in a rural community program in the Western Cape. Students enrolled in a community psychology postgraduate course participated in this project, during which they made use of reflective journaling to record
their individual processes. We used thematic analysis to explore the themes within these journals. Through engagement with the community, students were able to acknowledge and reflect on significant differences between learning in the classroom and in the community. They were also able to
identify the qualities needed to work effectively within communities, and began to consider the ideas of active citizenship and community involvement. Eleven students were able to unite on this project, developing both as individuals and psychology students, through their shared experiences.
Common themes of questioning existing structures and resource availability are discussed.
This pilot study examined the cross-cultural transportability of a western Circle of Security (COS) parenting program to improve on levels of parental self-efficacy in a South African setting . Participants (n = 9) were sampled from a fishing community on the West Coast of South Africa . The participants completed the COS with pre-test and post-test measures of their parenting self-efficacy . Furthermore, they completed an open-ended measure of their satisfaction with the parenting program . The data were analysed using the Wilcoxon sign-rank test and the Sign test to determine the significance in differences between pre-to-post-test change scores . In addition, a thematic analysis was conducted on participant's satisfaction with the parenting program . Results indicated significant and possible change scores for the efficacy scores: ability to handle parenting pressures, control, and learning . The participants considered the COS program appropriate to their context and situation . These preliminary findings support the need for further study of the COS parenting program within the broader context of South Africa .
