Faculty evaluation for the purpose of promotion and tenure frequently includes peer review as a part of the process. Faculty review by a peer may provide an assessment of teaching effectiveness and information related to the faculty member's professional development activities. This article presents an innovative, evidence-based approach using selected National League for Nursing core competencies and International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning clinical simulation standards in the development of a faculty peer review tool to gather data on clinical teaching to be used during the promotion and tenure process.
Prelicensure nursing education needs to prepare students for their future roles as professional nurses with ethical and moral decision-making skills. This article describes the use of theater as one approach to teaching nursing ethics at the prelicensure level. Students perform as actors, directors, and discussion leaders in a series of simulated ethical scenarios designed to encourage individual accountability and responsibility for action.
The nursing workforce is not keeping pace with the racial demographics in the United States. In addition, attrition rates for ethnic minorities in schools of nursing remain high. This qualitative study examined African American students' perceptions of factors that affect successful completion of nursing school. Five themes emerged: being invisible, sense of isolation, proving myself, focus on school as protective, and being misunderstood. Findings suggest that attention to identified influencing factors may affect minority student graduation success, increasing the likelihood of a diverse nursing workforce.
