Resumo: Os jornais populares são, em sua maioria, permeados de notícias ambíguas e exploradas de forma a criar no leitor uma sensação de proximidade entre a sua realidade "popular" e as notícias apresentadas. Em razão disso, o gênero textual capa de jornal apresenta-se como uma junção de elementos verbais e não-verbais (em outras palavras, elementos semióticos), explícitos e implícitos, que concorrem para a construção da significação do discurso jornalístico. Este artigo, portanto, pretende analisar capas de um jornal popular do Rio de Janeiro e indicar um dentre os múltiplos caminhos de utilização da semiótica e da semântica no ensino de língua portuguesa, a partir de sua aplicação, tendo como base o gênero textual capa de jornal em uma turma de pré-vestibular. Trataremos de alguns recursos estilístico-argumentativos, como a ambiguidade, a polissemia, a tautologia e a ironia, além da intertextualidade e da inferência. É necessário apontar que as formas de significação presentes nos textos são, portanto, mais múltiplas e contextualizadas do que uma primeira leitura superficial pode sugerir -não nos bastará buscar sentido apenas nas palavras por si só. Elementos semióticos compõem as capas de jornais (imagens, textos, posição textual e coloração, dentre outros) e não se pode entender que a utilização, desses componentes, não seja intencional e planejada. Sendo assim, nossa pretensão é demonstrar a utilização deste gênero em sala de aula como recurso didático para a abordagem dos referidos recursos estilístico-argumentativos/semântico-semióticos. Para tanto, foram selecionadas algumas capas do Jornal Meia Hora de Notícias, no período compreendido entre Janeiro e Abril de 2015.
