Palavras-chave: crescimento, fosfato, nitrato, Schizomeris leibleinii, poluição ABSTRACT -(Influence of nitrate and phosphate on the growth of Schizomeris leibleinii Kützing (Chaetophorales, Chlorophyta)).Schizomeris leibleinii Kützing is an algal species commonly found in eutrophic freshwater or in water polluted by organic nutrients and shows high potential as an organic pollution indicator. S. leibleinii was grown at different nitrate and phosphate concentrations for 50 days. Biomass was determined by quantifying chlorophyll a concentrations for different cultivation periods. Besides growth-curve analysis, data were evaluated by ANOVA (one way) and by Tukey's test for comparing treatments. The study revealed that S. leibleinii grew rapidly at low concentrations of nitrate and phosphate, but the best development occurred at high nitrate concentrations. Environmental stress initially promoted fast growth in this species, possibly accompanied by intense reproduction. In spite of the rapid growth of S. leibleinii, growth curves suggested that this species is probably a k-strategist. In addition, the alga was more dependent on nitrate than on phosphate concentration, indicating nitrogen as the limiting nutrient of growth in culture.
-(Taxonomic aspects of Schizomeris Kützing (Chaetophorales, Chlorophyta)). Schizomeris Kützing is a filamentous alga without ramifications and with differentiated basal attachment system. The genus contains the type species Schizomeris leibleinii Kützing and the two poorly known species S. irregularis Fritsch & Rich and S. indicum (Ghose) Fritsch & Rich. The species are differentiated mostly by the basal attachment system type. However, the specific taxonomy of the genus is confused. Morphometrical and morphological studies were conducted in populations identified as S. leibleinii according to two approaches. In the first one, 11 populations from different localities were analyzed and in the second, two distinct populations were monthly evaluated during 11 months. Diameter of multiseriate filaments, diameter and length of cells from multi and uniseriate filaments, presence of constriction, form of filament summit, and basal system type were evaluated in both approaches. In addition, karyological studies were conducted to complement taxonomic information. Results revealed a wide morphological variation, being more accentuated among populations from different localities than in the same populations along the time, but the characteristics showed a continuous gradient. The different types of the basal system described for the species of the genus (bluntly rounded, holdfast disc, lobed and rhizoid) were found in the populations studied. These findings suggest that distinction among the three species is very fragile and cannot be supported by differentiation of the basal system or metrical characteristics. Based on present results we consider that Schizomeris is composed by a single species. Karyological analyses resulted in n = 12, differing from previous studies and some possible explanations are discussed.Key words -Chaetophorales, karyology, morphological variation, Schizomeris leibleinii, taxonomy RESUMO -(Aspectos taxonômicos de Schizomeris Kützing (Chaetophorales, Chlorophyta)). Contudo, a taxonomia específica do gênero é confusa.
-(Macroalgae in springs and surrounding streams of northwestern region of São Paulo State). Macroalgae are typically benthic organisms that a mature, discreet and recognizable naked eye thallus, and microscopic identification is necessary. Several studies have been carried out aiming to the taxonomic knowledge in Brazilian streams, however works dealing with algae from springs are rare. Monthly sampling were carried out from February to September/2007 in springs and the surrounding (humid soil near the springs) of four streams in the northwestern region of São Paulo State. The floristic survey resulted in the identification of 13 species, being 54% of taxa belong Cyanophyta and 46% to Chlorophyta. Cylindrospermum gorakhpurense, Mougeotia gotlandica, Spirogyra gallica and S. taftiana were recorded for the first time to Brazil. The aquatic flora differed from the regional records due to presence of organisms of Zygnemataceae family (Chlorophyta) in reproductive stage. This type of habitat revealed to be very favorable to the Zygnemataceae reproduction.
-(Sirocladium robustum a new species of Zygnemataceae (Chlorophyta)). Sirocladium was described by Randhawa (type species S. kumaoense) on the basis of algal samples from damp soil at the margins of a waterfall in India. The genus is considered to be terrestrial and it is characterized by the presence only of two plate-like chloroplasts as well as by the occurrence of conjugation without tube formation. Currently, Sirocladium includes three additional species. S. maharashtrense Randhawa and S. vandalurense Randhawa are found on damp soils of India and S. cubense Rieth is known from humid soils of Cuba. The present study describes S. robustum, a new species of this poorly known genus of Zygnemataceae, whose specimens were collected growing on humid soil of a permanent puddle in the northwest region of the State of São Paulo, in Brazil. The higher dimensions of cells length and diameter, the zygospores dimensions and shape are the most distinctive characteristics of S. robustum from the other four species of the genus. Key words: Brazil, Sirocladium robustum, soil, Zygnemataceae RESUMO -(Sirocladium robustum, uma nova espécie de Zygnemataceae (Chlorophyta)).
Land use influences the biodiversity of stream systems by changing the chemical composition of the water and the physical structure of the habitat. The present study evaluated the influence of these processes on the diversity metrics of Odonata at regional and local scales, testing the hypothesis that the two odonate suborders Anisoptera and Zygoptera will respond differently to habitat and landscape variables. The study focused on 13 sites in the municipality of Barcarena, Pará, Brazil. We found no significant impact from regional factors, although anisopterans were more affected by water temperature and Habitat Integrity Index (HII). The HII indicated that the local forest was stable, but anisopteran richness was negatively correlated with HII. It was indicating that these species favoured open areas with less riparian cover. Even though zygopterans did not exhibit a similar systematic pattern, the reduced abundance of Chalcopteryx rutilans, a species associated with better-preserved habitats, may indicate that some sites lack the habitat integrity necessary to establish populations of this species. These findings highlight the importance of preserving the riparian forest to maintain the health of the stream systems. We recommend more studies that focus on the broader geographic and temporal scales to account for factors such as the anthropogenic gradient and historical land use patterns.
