Growth analysis of tomato plants 'SM-16' cultivated under different mulchingIn order to evaluate the growth of tomato plants cv. SM-16, grown under different mulching, a trial was carried out at WG Fruticultura, Baraúna, Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil, between July and November 2008. The experimental design was arranged in splitplots, under completely randomized blocks with four replications. Treatments (plots) were the mulching types: uncovered soil, black polyethylene film, silver polyethylene film, white polyethylene film and black polypropylene TNT, and the splitplots were sampling times: 14, 28, 42, 56, 70, 84 and 98 days after transplanting (DAT). Dry mass accumulation in leaves (AMSF), branches (AMSR), inflorescences (AMSI), fruits (AMSFR) and total (AMST), leaf area index (IAF), leaf area ratio (RAF), specific leaf area (AFE), absolute growth rate (TCA), relative growth rate (TCR) and net assimilation rate (TAL) were determined. The mulching influenced the development of dry matter accumulation in leaves, branches and fruits, and the TNT promoted the highest averages. The fruits behaved as the preferential drain of the plant. The TNT was the mulching that has promoted the highest average for the leaf area index and absolute and relative growth rates. The leaf area ratio, specific leaf area and net assimilation rate were not influenced by cover crops.
-The goal of this work was to evaluate the physiological responses of cowpea under water stress and rehydration in conventional and no-tillage systems. We evaluated two crop systems (conventional and no tillage) and three water conditions (no stress, moderate stress and severe stress). The following were determined: leaf area, total dry matter, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, internal CO 2 concentration and leaf water potential. Water stress affected all variables evaluated, with the exception of leaf water potential. Cowpea recovered with respect to all variables after rehydration at both stress levels. Stomatal closure is an important drought tolerance mechanism, and cowpea can be considered a conservative species (i.e., one that prioritizes water status maintenance rather than photosynthetic rate). Planting systems did not affect photosynthetic rate. The tillage system promoted greater accumulation of biomass and higher leaf area. Keywords: Leaf area. Photosynthesis. Stomatal conductance.
ABSTRACT:Water is the most important resource for agricultural production. The understanding of water competition mechanisms may lead to the development of new control strategies or coexistence with certain weed species, especially in situations where water is scarce. The objective of this work was to evaluate the competition between cowpea and weeds by water under the effect on plant growth. It was carried out experiment in greenhouse in the period from September to November 2015, in a randomized complete block design, with four replications. The treatments were arranged in factorial 5 x 2, with the first factor corresponding to the competition arrangements between the species (V. unguiculata + C. benghalensis; V. unguiculata + W. indica; V. unguiculata, C. benghalensis and W. indica in monoculture), and the second of water regimes (irrigated and water deficit). The water deficit reduces the growth of cowpea plants, C. benghalensis and W. indica. The competition between plants increases the effects of temporary water deficit in the soil. The W. indica leaf is the organ most affected by the water deficit. The weed specie W. indica has greater capacity competition for water with V. unguiculata than C. benghalensis. Palavras-chave: Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp, cobertura do solo, estresse hídrico, rendimento de grãos, componentes de produção AbstractThe objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different periods of water shortage in notillage and conventional crop systems on cowpea yield components and grain yield in the Mossoró-RN region. For this, an experiment was conducted using two tillage systems (conventional and no-tillage) subjected to periods of irrigation suspension (2; 6; 10; 14; 18 end 22 days), started at flowering (34 days after sowing). Plants were harvested 70 days after sowing, and the studied variables were: Pods length (CV), number of grains per pod (NGV), number of pods per plant (NPP), the hundred grains weight (PCG) and grain yield (kg ha -1 ). The no-tillage system is more productive than the conventional under both irrigation and water stress treatments. The water stress length affected grain yield and all yield components studied in a negative way, except for the hundred grains weight. Among the systems studied, the no-tillage provides higher values for the yield components, except the hundred grains weight.
Seedling production for reforestation aims to achieve the best plant growth in a minimal amount of time, to provide good survival and growth levels after transplantation. During cultivation, it is necessary to know the shading levels that lead to the best growth. The objective of this study was to assess the growth of young Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth. plants provided with various amounts of shade in the northeast semi-arid region of Brazil. Four types of shade cloth were tested (0, 30, 50 and 70%). Shoot length, stem diameter, stem dry matter, leaf dry matter, total dry matter and leaf area were assessed. Leaf area ratio, specific leaf area, absolute growth rate, relative growth rate and net assimilation rate were also calculated. The different shading levels affected M. caesalpinifolia growth, with the best growth indicators observed in plants grown under 50% shade, with increases in plant height, leaf area and total dry matter observed compared to the full sun condition.
