This article briefly describes the Judeo Christian roots of the “faith and work” movement and traces its more modern development through the industrial revolution and early twentieth century political/economic dynamics. Protestant and Catholic religious influences from the late nineteenth century through the present, as well as soul‐searching occasioned by 9/11, have helped articulate questions about the meaning of work, the “Sunday–Monday” gap, business as a vocation. Religiously diverse working environments simultaneously encourage reflection on the relationship between faith and work and a concern for respectful caution in discussing the topic in a managerial context.
