Alexandre Moreau de Jonnes attribuait au choléra, qui existait seulement sur quelques points du Bengale en 1817, 50 millions de victimes en l'espace de 14 ans. Jusqu'en mai 1831, l'épidémie s'était déclarée plus de 650 fois, selon le London and Paris Observer, tant en Asie qu'en Europe, détruisant plus du tiers de la population dans les villes arabes envahies, et seulement le vingtième en Russie. Terrible fléau originaire d'Asie, surgi du fond des temps, d'une puissance émotionnelle et suggestive telle qu'il a inspiré médecins, fonctionnaires, romanciers, caricaturistes. En se limitant à la France, tout département concerné, toute localité menacée suscitèrent études, recherches et brochures, gigantesque bibliographie dans la veine des travaux du XIXe siècle ; la quantification, avec ses tentatives parfois maladroites, fut appelée régulièrement à la rescousse. Quelques ouvrages et articles fort intéressants sur les épidémies de choléra à Paris, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, en Seine-et-Oise… ont paru au cours de ces dernières années.
