Résumé L’étude, présentée dans cet article, vise à décrire, selon l’analyse dimensionnelle présentée par Moscovici (1976) et les travaux de Doise (1990), les représentations de la mondialisation d’étudiants en sciences humaines et sociales, de six villes (Aix-en-Provence, Brest, Goiás, Mexico, Porto et Tunis) de cinq pays (Brésil, France, Mexique, Portugal et Tunisie). Un questionnaire, comportant une question d’évocation avec, pour mot-inducteur, celui de mondialisation (ou globalisation) et différentes échelles, permettant de mesurer l’attitude ou la position vis-à-vis de la mondialisation, a été soumis à 503 individus. Les données textuelles recueillies ont été analysées selon la méthodologie Alceste, développée par Reinert et confrontées à la position exprimée par les répondants sur l’objet. Les résultats mettent en évidence 1 o une correspondance systématique entre attitude et thématisation du discours sur la mondialisation, 2 o que les différences entre des positions différentes se traduisent par davantage de différences selon les évocations que selon les appartenances nationales, 3 o que la diversité expressive des thèmes évoqués par les répondants pourrait être réduite à deux lieux communs généraux que sont le progrès et l’échange, organisant le champ de cette représentation.
Un des apports les plus évidents de Moscovici, lorsqu'il a proposé, en 1961, la théorie des représentations sociales, a été de lier les logiques sociales et les processus de pensée pour rendre compte de la manière dont la science se constituait en connaissance de sens commun. Ce faisant, le processus d'objectivation, qui n'est pas sans évoquer le raisonnement par analogies, est étayé au processus d'ancrage qui concilie l'actualité de ces connaissances et leur inscription dans la mémoire. Ces deux processus sont eux-mêmes dépendants de logiques sociales, puisque les connaissances de sens commun s'élaborent à partir de différentes modalités de communication et qu'elles permettent d'établir la correspondance entre les groupes sociaux et les produits représentés (Moscovici, 1976). Le caractère dynamique de ces connaissances est ainsi établi et a ouvert la voie à différentes recherches sur la manière dont les représentations sociales pouvaient se transformer (Abric, 1994;Flament, 1994). Si la manière dont la réalité changeante en venait à s'inscrire dans les représentations est objet de recherches, en revanche, la manière dont un individu changeait de réalité, n'a pas, jusqu'il y a peu, suscité beaucoup d'intérêt. C'est, en fait, la question de la mobilité sociale qui se trouve posée à la théorie des représentations sociales. En effet, en s'appuyant sur les travaux de Bourdieu, Doise appréhende les représentations sociales sous l'angle des relations hiérarchisées entre les groupes, relations qui les façonnent et en portent la trace. Si elles sont, dès lors, considérées comme des «principes organisateurs de prises de position» (1986), c'est que le discours d'un individu peut être rapporté à la position qu'il occupe dans un champ social donné.Les représentations sociales ainsi envisagées se présentent sous une forme paradoxale. En effet, la connaissance ordinaire que procurent les représentations fonctionne comme une reconnaissance envisagée selon un double mode: reconnaissance des figures les plus aptes à soutenir et à porter la parole du groupe, et reconnaissance que l'individu comme membre d'un groupe peut escompter de l'investissement qu'il réalise dans des discours qu'il tient. Mais cette connaissance est aussi méconnaissance, puisque les principes qui la fondent ne se donnent à voir, la plupart du temps, qu'au travers des connaissances qu'ils engendrent. De ce fait, dans la logique ordinaire des rapports sociaux, la communication à laquelle l'individu participe se trouve étayée et soutenue par ses appartenances sociales. Cependant, les discours qu'il produit sont méconnus en tant qu'ils résultent de la position que l'individu occupe dans la société, position que ces discours contribuent pourtant à soutenir.
