This article delves into two important codes used specifically in dealing with youth, particularly in the segment “Dans nos écoles”, in La Liberté, the Franco-Manitoban newspaper. The author demonstrates to what extent the code used for titles and the one linked to notions of “fun”, “happiness”, “cool” and “pleasure”, are all connected to a type of interdiscursivity through which advertorials take on informative functions, while at the same time creating strong links of semantic solidarity with the discourse of publicity in a consumer society. Indeed, the representation of youth becomes the object of this generalised intertextuality, and does so, by using different methods this study hopes to highlight
The present article discusses the conditions necessary for the emergence of an imaginary figure during the act of reading. It intends to demonstrate the modalities by which any figure invokes a unique aesthetic experience. The author first emphasises the role of cognitive, argumentative, affective and symbolic semiotic processes; he then demonstrates how, in the context of literary reading, this interaction implies a dialectic between topological and analogical modes of signification. The give and take between these modes calls forth a description of the notional context necessary for the emergence of a figure during literary reading: complexity, memory, imagination and scalar series. The analysis of a narrative sequence from Gabrielle Roy’s La route d’Altamont serves, on the one hand, to advance understanding of the interaction between the semiotic processes implicated in signification at the topological level and, on the other, to identify the discursive foundations required for the emergence of an imaginary figure. With specific reference to alchemy and lead poisoning, the final section of the article outlines the crystallisation of such a figure in the context of relations between youth and old age
