In spite of many troubles, peculiar to submarine geomorphological research, namely the lack of accuracy of the ship's position, and the great amount of interpolation, the use of model method for the study of submerged shorelines has allowed to recognize, in the inner part of the continental shelf in the South of Brittany, several well preservated shores, probably neo-würmian ones. The kind of sediments, and the connections between shorelines, allow us to bring forward a relative chronology, and some correlations with the stratigraphy of the continental deposits in Brittany. Absolute chronology may be this one : after the normanian high sea level (until 27 000 B.P.), a eustatic recession made the level fall, with steps at 52, 89 and 92 m, down to 106 m under the present sea-level. The central stage of this regression is connected with a wet penglacial climate, and the minimal level, about 16 000 B.P., with a dry periglacial climate. Then the sea climbed to 37 m below present level, during Alleröd stage, went down to 55 m during Dryas III, and rose again, for about 4 000 years, nearly to present level.
The output of bottom fishing, over the Armorican continental shelf, is decreasing in spite of protecting measures for fauna. The passage from a gathering economy to a nearly agricultural economy will be necessary in the future, but a first stage is achievable : the attribution of each fishing area to responsible exploiters. Recent technical progress is one of the causes of overfishing, but scientific progress, especially through the improvement of the knowledge of the sea-bottoms, allows to propose a new exploiting pattern: each of the areas, homogeneous by their morphology, sediments and fauna, which can be recognized on the shelf, would be ascribed to a group of fishermen, who would be the only beneficiaries of their wise exploitation, and the only victims of their eventual misuse.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
