La notion d'ecphrasis ne correspond pas exactement à ce que l'on entend couramment, dans notre tradition littéraire, par « description ». En effet, notamment depuis G.H. Lessing qui a opposé radicalement la narration à la description dans son Laocoon, c'est le réfèrent qui sert essentiellement à les distinguer l'une de l'autre : la première représente dans leur déroulement chronologique des actions et des événements, tandis que la seconde décrit des objets ou des personnages. Au contraire, pour les théoriciens anciens, l'ecphrasis est seulement définie par sa force de visualisation et par le ralentissement de la narration qui la produit, quel que soit le réfèrent, sans que ce type de texte ait nécessairement l'aspect statique d'une vision simultanée ou d'un « tableau ». Il semblerait enfin que ce soit 1'« ecphrasis d'actions » qui en ait été, sans doute dès le ne siècle av. J.-C. et jusqu'au lue siècle ap. J.-C, la forme la plus prestigieuse.
