Sur la côte occidentale de Madagascar, le delta de la Tsiribihina formé un saillant d'environ 500 km2. Le paysage est caractérisé par de grandes étendues de mangroves et de sols nus sursalés, les tannes, entrecoupées par des cordons littoraux anciens. A la population sakalava anciennement enracinée dans le delta, se sont ajoutés au début du siècle des migrants antaisaka et betsileo. Les activités actuelles sont orientées vers l' autosubsistance et tirent partie d'un milieu naturel bien diversifié ; la riziculture est la plus originale d'entre elles. On la pratique après défrichement de la mangrove selon des techniques autochtones. Sur les cordons sableux qui supportent l'habitat, on observe des cocoteraies et l'existence de troupeaux de zébus. La pêche, enfin, fait l'objet d'une spécialisation dans quelques villages.
