Les derniers siècles du Moyen Âge virent se créer une multitude de pèlerinages locaux, tantôt éphémères, tantôt plus durables, dont beaucoup, la majorité sans doute, étaient dédiés à la Vierge Marie, la médiatrice par excellence. Dans de nombreux cas, une image miraculeuse focalisait la dévotion et constituait le principal objet de culte intrinsèquement lié à l'identité du sanctuaire vers lequel les fidèles se rendaient pour satisfaire une dévotion surtout de proximité, rechercher des indulgences, demander un bienfait, essentiellement la santé, ou accomplir le voeu qui leur avait permis d'obtenir chez eux la guérison ou d'être délivrés d'une autre difficulté 1 . Encouragé lorsqu'on pouvait le contrôler, le phénomène souleva aussi de vives critiques même en dehors des mouvements contestataires comme les lollards, les hussites et bientôt les protestants. On déplorait la prolifération des pèlerinages au détriment de dévotions anciennes et du culte paroissial. On s'inquiétait de leur naissance souvent en marge des institutions ecclésiastiques, de l'afflux désordonné de peuple dans les premiers temps et des possibles supercheries dans les miracles qui provoquaient ce concursus. On se préoccupait aussi de la « superstition » consistant, selon certains, à privilégier un lieu et une image plutôt que d'autres et des risques d' « idolâtrie » résultant de l'individualisation locale du personnage céleste 2 . Sans nier l'existence de problèmes, le célèbre réformateur et humaniste bénédictin Jean Trithème (Ioannes Trithemius, 1462-1516) fut amené dans les dernières années de sa vie à défendre ces pèlerinages et leurs miracles. Il était depuis 1506 abbé du petit monastère Saint-Jacques à Wurtzbourg, après avoir renoncé à l'abbatiat, exercé de 1483 à 1505, du monastère de Sponheim près de Bad Kreuznach (Rhénanie-Palatinat) à cause de l'opposition de sa communauté 3 . Ses propos à la fois prudents et engagés sur le sujet ont déjà retenu l'attention 4 , mais ils me semblent mériter, en hommage au savant historien que fut Dom Daniel Misonne, d'être étudiés de plus près et sur une base plus large. 2 Klaus SCHREINER, « 'Peregrinatio laudabilis' und 'peregrinatio vituperalis'.
