To achieve a better understanding of life conditions in the suburbs (banlieues) that erupted in the 2005 riots, segregation in France is here evaluated for the first time. The apparent reduction in class segregation between two most recent full censuses and the contrary rise in ethnic segregation are shown. Using longitudinal data and observing the residential mobility of residents in the 'sensitive neighbourhoods', it is shown that: most who move out are upwardly mobile; Africans find it harder to move out and are three times more likely to move into the least-advantaged neighbourhoods; the more the neighbourhood is disadvantaged, the more its residents move into another equally disadvantaged neighbourhood.

To avoid the conventional and normative pitfalls of neighbourhood satisfaction scales, the responses to a non-inductive open question identified six statistical types of resident in France. The reasons for their satisfaction or dissatisfaction reflect both personal inclinations and characteristics of the neighbourhood. By controlling for these characteristics, for the local network of relationships, for the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents and the social type of the neighbourhood, poor neighbourhoods stand apart in all six types of resident. The few reasons for contentment stem mainly from relationships with relatives and friends in the neighbourhood. The introduction of a socio-residential variable to categorise the neighbourhood socially clarifies residents' perceptions in terms of their social grade.

À partir de données longitudinales et de l’observation des mobilités résidentielles des résidents des « quartiers sensibles », nous montrons une baisse de la ségrégation d’origine sociale et à l’inverse une hausse de la ségrégation des Africains (du Nord et du Sud) entre 1990 et 1999. Non seulement la mobilité des habitants des quartiers sensibles est importante mais les sortants, Français ou Africains, effectuent majoritairement une mobilité ascendante. Les effectifs des Africains augmentent en quartiers sensibles par l’arrivée d’immigrés récents, dont ces quartiers constituent l’une de leur première étape résidentielle sur le territoire national. Il semble moins s’agir d’autoségrégation que de bénéfice d’une solidarité « au démarrage ». À variables sociodémographiques et au degré de précarité du quartier contrôlés, les Africains sortent plus difficilement des zones sensibles et ont quatre fois plus de risques de s’installer dans les quartiers parmi les plus précarisés par rapport aux Français, suggérant fortement une discrimination ethnique. Ainsi, la ségrégation des Africains en quartiers sensibles s’avère ambiguë, mais néanmoins progresse dans la période. L’utilisation du degré de précarité d’un quartier, approché par son taux de chômage, apporte une dimension supplémentaire dans la compréhension des phénomènes ségrégatifs car il n’est pas indifférent que la ségrégation s’effectue dans les quartiers où la misère est la plus concentrée.
