Microcapsules containing reactive diisocyanate for use in self-healing polymers are successfully fabricated via interfacial polymerization of polyurethane (PU). Isocyanates are potential catalyst-free healing agents for use in humid or wet environments. The preparation of PU prepolymer and microencapsulation of isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) healing agent are presented. Smooth spherical microcapsules of 40−400 μm in diameter are produced by controlling agitation rate (500−1500 rpm) according to a power law relation (n = −2.24). The PU shell wall thickness varies linearly with capsule diameter, such that the capsules wall thickness to diameter ratio is constant (∼0.05). High yields (∼70%) of a free-flowing powder of IPDI/PU capsules are produced with a liquid core content of 70 wt % as determined by TGA analysis. The microcapsules are stable with only ∼10 wt % loss of IPDI detected after 6 months storage under ambient conditions. Direct mechanical compression testing of microcapsules reveals a brittle fracture mode and normalized shell wall strength that varies with capsule diameter in a power law fashion (n = −0.77).
This review traces the structural maturation of the human auditory system, and compares the timeline of anatomical development with cotemporaneous physiological and behavioral events. During the embryonic period, there is formation of basic structure at all levels of the system, i.e. the inner ear, the brainstem pathway, and the cortex. The second trimester is a time of rapid growth and development, and by the end of this period, the cochlea has acquired a very adult-like configuration. During the perinatal period, the brainstem reaches a mature state, and brainstem activity is reflected in behavioral responses to sound, including phonetic discrimination, and in evoked brainstem and early middle latency responses. The perinatal period is also the time of peak development of brainstem input to the cortex through the marginal layer, and of the long latency cortical potentials, the N(2) and mismatch negativity. In early childhood, from the sixth post-natal month to age five, there is progressive maturation of the thalamic projections to the cortex and of the longer latency Pa and P(1) evoked potentials. Later childhood, from six to twelve years, is the time of maturation of the superficial cortical layers and their intracortical connections, accompanied by appearance of the N(1) potential and improved linguistic discriminative abilities. Some consideration is given to the potential negative effects of deafness-induced sound deprivation during the perinatal period and childhood.
Redox-active organic materials (ROMs) have shown great promise for redox flow battery applications but generally encounter limited cycling efficiency and stability at relevant redox material concentrations in nonaqueous systems. Here we report a new heterocyclic organic anolyte molecule, 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole, that has high solubility, a low redox potential, and fast electrochemical kinetics. Coupling it with a benchmark catholyte ROM, the nonaqueous organic flow battery demonstrated significant improvement in cyclable redox material concentrations and cell efficiencies compared to the state-of-the-art nonaqueous systems. Especially, this system produced exceeding cyclability with relatively stable efficiencies and capacities at high ROM concentrations (>0.5 M), which is ascribed to the highly delocalized charge densities in the radical anions of 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole, leading to good chemical stability. This material development represents significant progress toward promising next-generation energy storage.
