Resumo O artigo defende que Maquiavel foi um pensador trágico. Após breve introdução sobre os aspectos centrais de uma visão trágica de mundo, apresento, na primeira seção, evidências de que o autor de O Príncipe poderia ter chegado a esta visão a partir das fontes disponíveis no seu contexto intelectual. Entre estas fontes, destaco a recepção do livro De Rerum Natura, de Lucrécio, na Florença renascentista. Na segunda seção, procuro explicitar a visão trágica do cosmos presente nos textos de Maquiavel, com ênfase na sua teoria do encontro (riscontro). Na terceira seção, defendo que diante deste cosmos trágico, Maquiavel coloca-se em favor de uma afirmação trágica, que aposta na virtù mesmo sabendo que seu sucesso depende de um encontro feliz com a Fortuna, que pode acontecer ou não.
Neste artigo analisamos o uso que os teóricos agonísticos da democracia tem feito da filosofia de Nietzsche com foco em uma de suas principais proposições normativas: a ideia de “respeito agonístico”. Na primeira seção apresentamos características gerais da apropriação da filosofia de Nietzsche pelos teóricos agonísticos da democracia. Na segunda seção apresentamos o que William Connolly e Lawrence Hatab entendem por “respeito agonístico” e “respeito democrático”. Na terceira seção criticamos estas apropriações da filosofia de Nietzsche a partir de textos do próprio Nietzsche, apontando alguns limites da noção de respeito agonístico e sustentando que estes teóricos utilizam Nietzsche para promover uma ética do laisser aller que foi duramente criticada por ele.

A partir de trabalhos recentes que destacam os elementos trágicos do pensamento de Hannah Arendt, procuramos mostrar que a reflexão de Nietzsche sobre o niilismo tem um papel relevante na crítica de Arendt à tradição da filosofia política. Em seguida, analisamos duas características da tradição que para Arendt seriam particularmente nocivas para a política: a tirania da verdade e a desmedida do Bem.
