Résumé Cet article propose un premier bilan des résultats de l’expérience menée en région PACA depuis 2002 de constitution d’un « observatoire des pratiques » des médecins libéraux : le panel MG PACA de 600 médecins généralistes. Les questions traitées sont diverses : méthodologiques : représentativité et attrition statistiques caractérisant le suivi longitudinal d’une population ; socio-économiques : revenus et conditions de travail des médecins ; médicales : modalités de prise en charge de certaines pathologies. Une « analyse des correspondances multiples » fait apparaître des profils de pratiques des médecins relativement marqués, particulièrement en ce qui concerne l’activité, les habitudes de prescription et l’accès à l’information médicale. Enfin, l’ambition d’un tel panel serait de constituer un dispositif pérenne d’appréhension de la profession de médecin généraliste, puis de devenir un véritable outil d’aide à la décision de politique sanitaire : en quoi consiste aujourd’hui le métier de médecin généraliste ; peut-on le faire évoluer et comment ?
