We review the theoretical and empirical literature leading to the "institutional turn" in the economics of development. Sociologists have welcomed this turn as a vindication of their own ideas
RESUMENRevisamos la literatura teórica y empírica que condujo al "viraje institucional" en la economía del desarrollo. Los sociólogos dieron la bienvenida a este viraje como una reivindicación de sus propias ideas, pero obviaron dos problemas fundamentales en la literatura económica. Primero, fallos al definir las instituciones en forma rigurosa y distinguirlas de las organizaciones reales que subyacen a las instituciones; segundo, la tendencia a utilizar la nación como unidad de análisis olvidando sus diferencias internas. Respondemos a estas limitaciones a través de un estudio comparativo de veintinueve instituciones en América Latina y Europa del Sur. Utilizando el método de Analisis Cualitativo Comparado (QCA), examinamos la combinación de causas que producen organizaciones institucionalmente adecuadas y capaces de contribuir al desarrollo. Discutimos las diferencias halladas tanto entre países como entre organizaciones. Finalmente examinamos las implicaciones del complejo conjunto de factores que conducen a instituciones desarrollistas en este grupo de países.
