A new species of Amorphophallus is described and illustrated here, from the province of Camarines Norte, Luzon island, the Philippines. The new species, A. caudatus, is morphologically close to A. luzoniensis in having a verruculose spadix, a similar spathe shape, and similar size of the ovary. However, the new species is distinct by its larger leaves, a longer peduncle, a longer and wider spathe, an inflated, verruculose spadix which strongly narrows to the caudate upper half, a fusiform ovary, and a shorter style with a shallowly 2–3‐lobed stigma. The peculiar shape of the spadix with its verruculose inflated base and caudate upper half is unique amongst Philippine Amorphophallus species.
New names and new combinations are presented for 29 Philippine species in the families Acanthaceae, Aspleniaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Gesneriaceae, Lauraceae, Myrtaceae, Oleaceae, Thelypteridaceae, Urticaceae, and Vitaceae. Seventeen names are lectotypified.
Abstract. A new species and a rediscovery in the genus Saurauia (Actinidiaceae) from Zamboanga Peninsula, Mindanao island, Philippines are presented here. The new species, Saurauia abbreviata, closely resembles Saurauia lanaensis Merr. but can be differentiated by having longer petioles, uniformly setose adaxial leaf surface, longer and wider leaves, more lateral veins, 3 styles, and a 3(–4)-locular ovary. This discovery raises the current number of recognized Saurauia in the Philippines to 57 following an 87-year gap in the taxonomic study of this genus in the country. S. longipedicellata Merr. is also rediscovered after almost a century. A lectotype is here assigned for this name selected among the syntypes. Photographs, ecological notes, and an amended description are also provided to aid taxonomic identification.
Aeschynanthus rejieae from Panglima Sugala, one of the few remaining forested areas in Tawi-Tawi, Philippines, is illustrated and described as a new species. It resembles A. obconicus and A. ovatus by the ovate leaves and dense indumentum in the external calyx and corolla. However, A. rejieae is distinguished by having leaves that have persistent sparse pubescence, campanulate calyx with dense hirsute indumentum both internally and externally, and ovary with a glandular cilia. This species is named after Rejie Sahali-Generale, who initiated the biodiversity conservation in Panglima Sugala. This new discovery further highlights the urgent need to study and conserve the remaining forests of Tawi-Tawi.
