Amé-rica Latina, Caribe.Abstract: Discussion about the need to develop research capabilities are frequent. Fields such as Library and Information Science are not the exception. Therefore we attempted to determine, bibliometrically, the publication activity of the Latin American and the Caribbean countries. The country's profile was based on data retrieved from Library and Infonnation Science Abstracts, Library Literature and Infonnation Science Abstracts. A total of 1.911 unique records was retrieved. We found that: Brazil was the most productive country; Brazilian joumals, as a result, published the majority of retrieved papers. Latin America and Caribbean professionals use English and Portuguese to communicate with their peers. We concluded that results could be useful to higher education institutions. among others, in order to rethink their role as centres of training of the professionals that, as members of scientific communities, would have to develop research as
) cumulative impact factor lists. The laureates published 2,049 papers and were cited 50,834 times. Our results showed the scientific pre-eminence of laureates. We concluded that bibliometric data could complement other indicators of research performance. Bibliometrics could insure the Prize committee against error and the operationalization of the Matthew Effect could be minimized to honor only the most creative researchers.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
