Resumen: Habitualmente se considera que el Reino Unido llevó a cabo un proceso ordenado de descolonización en el Oriente Medio, el cual habría tenido su punto de arranque en el desastre de Suez. Por el contrario, la evidencia histórica nos muestra que el gobierno Macmillan optó por mantener el imperio en esa zona mediante estrategias de «salir del paso» (muddling through) y cierto redimensionamiento (retrenchment), por lo que la supervivencia de sus alianzas debió garantizarse mediante nuevas intervenciones militares. No obstante, fueron la propia debilidad británica, la actividad del nacionalismo árabe y los problemas para conciliar sus intereses con los de Estados Unidos los que hicieron inviables los esfuerzos del gobierno Macmillan.
