Este artículo examina la construcción social de organizaciones de servicios financieros en dos contextos sociales muy diferentes como son Chile y Reino Unido, observando como los agentes económicos actúan dentro de estructuras sociales, institucionales y culturales y, en base a entrevistas en profundidad en Santiago de Chile, Londres y Edimburgo, cubriendo una alta variedad de profesionales y posiciones.
Los resultados muestran distintos procedimientos y rutinas laborales en Chile y Reino Unido, lo que parece explicarse por diferentes distribuciones de recursos y posiciones diferenciadas en el sistema financiero global. Si en Chile se utilizan métodos exclusivos que seleccionan integrantes de la elite económica local, en Reino Unido se utilizan métodos de orientación cientificista que apuntan a un gran número de postulantes.
The article deals with the problem of the role of ‘social’ devices at the time of producing and reproducing organizational behavior, taking the case of recruitment and selection processes in financial services organizations in Chile and the UK. Based on 42 in-depth interviews in Santiago, London and Edinburgh, and building on science and technology studies and the concept of device the article aims to understand how recruitment and election mechanisms are adopted and legitimated in organizations. Analysis suggests that recruitment and selection mechanisms connect technical and moral elements, allowing managers to deal with uncertainty and carry out organizational reproduction. However, devices in Chile and the UK differ in the modes that connect technical and moral elements.
