Short-intense induction FOLFOX-4 significantly improves pathologic complete response in LARC patients treated with tegafur-sensitized preoperative chemoradiation. The 44% rate of pT(0)-(1) specimens observed in the oxaliplatin group should impulse innovative surgical approaches to promote ano-rectal sphincter conserving protocols.
A modest surgical interval delay (≥6 weeks) did not increase postoperative complications and was identified as a favorable prognostic factor for OS, although no differences were observed in pCR, LC, or DFS. Innovative multidisciplinary strategies incorporating further time extension of the surgical interval can be safely explored.

The coronavirus disease 2019 crisis has had a major and highly complex impact on the clinical practice of radiation oncology worldwide. Spain is one of the countries hardest hit by the virus, with devastating consequences. There is an urgent need to share experiences and offer guidance on decision-making with regard to the indications and standards for radiation therapy in the treatment of lung cancer. In the present article, the Oncological Group for the Study of Lung Cancer of the Spanish Society of Radiation Oncology reviews the literature and establishes a series of consensus-based recommendations for the treatment of patients with lung cancer in different clinical scenarios during the present pandemic.
Background
The integration of 3D printing technology in hospitals is evolving toward production models such as point-of-care manufacturing. This study aims to present the results of the integration of 3D printing technology in a manufacturing university hospital.
Methods
Observational, descriptive, retrospective, and monocentric study of 907 instances of 3D printing from November 2015 to March 2020. Variables such as product type, utility, time, or manufacturing materials were analyzed.
Results
Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Gynecology and Obstetrics are the medical specialties that have manufactured the largest number of processes. Working and printing time, as well as the amount of printing material, is different for different types of products and input data. The most common printing material was polylactic acid, although biocompatible resin was introduced to produce surgical guides. In addition, the hospital has worked on the co-design of custom-made implants with manufacturing companies and has also participated in tissue bio-printing projects.
Conclusions
The integration of 3D printing in a university hospital allows identifying the conceptual evolution to “point-of-care manufacturing.”
An IORT programme developed in an Academic Hospital based on practice-oriented medical decisions is an attractive interdisciplinary oncology initiative proven to be able to generate an intensive clinical activity for cancer patient quality care and a competitive source of scientific patient-oriented research, development and innovation.
